Last week, Imre Vass had the privilege of participating in the “Market Zoom: Germany & Nordics” panel discussion at #RESource2024 in Amsterdam. Here are some highlights of Imre's perspective:   🔸 Looking at the development of the past 2 years in the German and Nordic PPA markets, we can see some differences in terms of structure, contracted volumes and dominating technologies, but with an extremely high share of cPPA, both markets very clearly show the importance of corporate offtakers for the PPA market and the energy transition. 🔸 Regulatory discussions such as a possible split of bidding zones or a new subsidy system in Germany are causing uncertainty in the market. 🔸 Previous geopolitical confrontations have highlighted the sensitivity of power markets and always pose a risk of price shocks. 🔸 Imre emphasizes that reaching the LCOE levels in the PPA pricing remains crucial for project developers when securing financing. Falling panel prices and interest rates are set against rising prices of some raw materials and labour costs for future LCOE development. 🔸 Timing is critical in this evolving PPA market. Imre emphasizes that waiting for more favourable conditions could be counterproductive and risky.   The dynamic discussion with Maria Flora Middelboe Andersen and Emanuele Manigrassi enriched the conversation by bringing different perspectives on the pressing issues facing different sectors. Several members of our ONE-team attended #RESource2024 in Amsterdam last week! ♻👌 Among them was our Polish colleague, Piotr Raczkowski, who has returned home tired, but energized, after 3 eventful days. With a lot of new connections and a calendar filled with meetings, Piotr shares his reflections below: "Exciting developments in Poland’s renewable energy landscape! Some takeaways regarding the Polish market include: 🔸 PPA Pricing Dynamics: While the strong supply of PV projects has driven PPA prices down, they still don't align with the low forward electricity trading prices. For risk managers especially in heavy industries and chemicals, current PPA pricing remains a challenge for long-term competitiveness. 🔸 Attraction of Hybrid Projects: The limited pipeline of wind projects means hybrid projects are emerging as a more attractive option for offtakers, offering lower profile risks. However, the supply of these projects is still constrained. 🔸 Adaptive Production Schedules: Some corporates are actively working on modifying their production schedules to consume more electricity during periods of robust renewable production, optimizing their energy costs and sustainability efforts. 🔸 Anticipating AIB Membership: Of utmost importance is Poland’s anticipated accession to the AIB (Association of Issuing Bodies), which would simplify the sourcing of green electricity and enhance market access for offtakers. However, the consequence of that may be a shift to cross-border PPAs sourced outside Poland, which will have a negative effect on the local market. Navigating these challenges will be crucial for long-term success in the renewable energy landscape. Our New Energy recently collaborated with SBA Group from Lithuania on a visit to Billund Varmeværk and Thorsø Biogas to showcase the possibilities for a green district heating supply. The focus was on exploring fuel diversification and the potential of electrifying district heating systems as more renewable energy sources are integrated into the grid. The biogas facility highlighted the benefits of local partnerships by sourcing manure from nearby farmers, enabling the production of affordable, eco-friendly gas for the district heating and gas grid. By utilizing a variety of fuel sources, district heating systems can improve supply security and keep costs stable, adjusting to fluctuations in electricity prices through different technologies. Local partnerships for sourcing straw and wood chips further highlight how strong networks support an efficient and sustainable district heating model. Our New Energy has deep insights in the energy market allowing for a holistic approach to examining projects such as establishing district heating and how it integrates with all the different parts of the energy system.
