What do you think a new Nordic AI centre means for the region's AI companies and startups? The new centre, spearheaded by stakeholders from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, will be located in Sweden and run by AI Sweden. It aims to create a unified platform for advancing AI technologies across the Nordic countries and focus on fostering cooperation between industry, academia, and government to drive innovation and tackle pressing societal issues, such as healthcare, sustainability, and digital transformation. The Nordic region is home to some 28 million people whose robust buying power, positive attitude to new technology, and high salary levels help make it fertile ground for AI solutions. There is a flourishing AI startup scene, and combining forces across the region with a new AI centre makes a lot of sense. However, it remains to be seen how exactly the new centre will work - and how it can support AI companies, startups, and businesses across the region. What AI startups and established firms alike need is benefits like stronger networks and access to shared infrastructure and research. What we need to avoid is the new centre overly focusing on rules and regulations around AI, which could end up being more detrimental than beneficial to Nordic AI companies. Nordic AI thoughts: Can we become world leaders in AI data centres? For the time being, there is no way around AI technologies’ considerable energy needs. For AI to become sustainable, we need solutions and thinking differently. Sam Altman has previously made news speaking of ChatGPT becoming fully nuclear-powered by 2027. It should be noted that the nuclear energy in question would be delivered by an energy startup that Altman has backed through investments. The Nordic countries could provide different opportunities for addressing the issue. Our focus on sustainability and renewable energy is complemented by cool weather (not great for our summer holidays, but great for AI and data centres). The strength of hydroelectric power in Norway and wind energy in Denmark can provide AI data centres and companies access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy and reduce AI’s carbon emissions. This is not a fancy idea, but something that is already happening, led by innovative companies like atNorth. Incresed public support and investment could further improve these companies’ ability to attract more customers and further boost the AI innovation speed in the Nordic countries. What do you think? In our latest edition of the Pioneer AI newsletter, we look at how AI changes how work is performed - if you and your company use it right, that is. In short, viewing artificial intelligence merely as a tool is a common misconception that undervalues its transformative potential in the workplace. Instead, we propose looking at AI through the lens of the "70-30 rule." In this approach, AI takes on about 70% of a task—especially the repetitive or time-consuming parts—freeing up human experts to focus on the more complex and creative 30%. This shift not only enhances efficiency but also sparks innovation across organizations. However, harnessing the full potential of AI isn't automatic. It demands significant investment in training. Employees at all levels need to learn how to effectively use AI tools and more importantly, when to step in with human insight to add the most value. Integrating AI isn't about turning it into an advanced spreadsheet. It's about weaving this technology into our daily workflows to amplify our natural abilities. This allows us to excel at what humans do best: thinking creatively and solving complex problems.
