Global demand growth is highly lopsided. When looking at TEU growth, and therefore not the effect of the Red Sea crisis, what appears as relatively strong global growth, is in reality mainly driven by imports to North America To follow the Sunday Spotlight, please contact info@sea-intelligence.com for further information. #seaintelligence #containershipping #growth #RedSea

Weekly container vessel capacity departing a region is rarely stable and consistent, since there are differences in the capacity of departing vessels, even on an individual liner service. These weekly fluctuations can be quite drastic, especially during Chinese New Year and Golden Week, which makes seeing the underlying trends quite challenging. As things stand, current blank sailings scheduled for the four-week Golden Week period are adequate to match the average capacity reduction seen in 2017-2019, but far from the level seen in 2023. Sea-Intelligence has for the past 13 years, regularly analysed the online carbon emissions calculators provided by the ocean carriers. And over the years, we have shown significant discrepancy between the results provided by these calculators. We did this exercise once again, focusing on Ocean Alliance, as all member carriers have publicly available carbon calculators. To follow the Sunday Spotlight, please contact info@sea-intelligence.com for further information. #seaintelligence #containershipping #emission #carboncalculator

Shipping lines have so far recorded a combined 2024-Q2 EBIT of USD 4.28bn, and this is without COSCO and HMM, as they are yet to publish their financial results. ONE sees volume growth on AE while others continue to suffer. Volume growth on TP continues unabated. In our Press Release on August 8th, we mentioned how US consumer spending data did not support the notion of a sudden US spending boom. The new June 2024 US inventory data, released by the US Census Bureau, shows that the US retailers have been growing inventories, which further supports the notion that the strong growth in container imports was used to grow inventories, and not due to an underlying increase in consumer spending. US retailers have been growing the inventories beyond what sales accommodate for, and with a single exception, now deviate more from the long-term trend, than seen since after the financial crisis To follow the Sunday Spotlight, please contact info@sea-intelligence.com for further information. #seaintelligence #containershipping #growth #inventory

The labour agreement between the US East Coast port workers’ union, ILA, and the terminals organization, USMX, expires on September 30th, 2024, with a potential strike being initiated from October 1st, 2024. In this context, it is worthwhile to look at the impact in terms of actual container volumes, and how long it would potentially take to move the impacted containers, once a potential strike is over.
