Lithuanian MedCAD project delivers better healthcare with computer-aided diagnosis tool

  • 10 June 2021

The MedCAD, or medical computer-aided diagnosis software, is improving clinical decision-making in healthcare. The software allows medical personnel to analyze information and make diagnoses more efficiently. This leads to quicker and better-informed decisions for patients and, ultimately, more lives being saved.

‘MedCAD allows patients to access their data faster and doctors to make their decisions more precisely and connect various systems by using one technology. It significantly reduces system maintenance costs and enables wider access to medical data and visualisation of medical records.’

Vytautas Baublys, CEO and co-founder of software company Softneta

MedCAD is an open-source technology that offers patients and doctors direct access to medical data and diagnostic imaging. It allows users to view and process medical images in different formats.

It can be used on the most common operating systems on the market: Windows, Mac OS and Linux and is based on HTML5 code, which makes it available through any browser, at any time and any place.

The diagnostic image visualization technology collects data independently from the infrastructure of the facility where it is being used. This allows older facilities to use it without having to upgrade their systems or undertake costly renovations.

AI-enabled algorithms

The platform allows users to acquire and integrate an unlimited amount of image processing or external clinical decision tools from third parties, including artificial intelligence-enabled algorithms.

For example, one of the algorithms integrated in MedCAD detects spinal diseases. The algorithm is based on spinal distortion recognition indicators that help doctors determine the corresponding spinal disease.

Improving access

The EU-funded project is helping to solve the lack of access to diagnostic images in the healthcare sector. Between 70% and 80% of diagnostic problems can be resolved with medical imaging, but only one third of the population has access to this tool.

Advanced developments in AI could solve this issue. However, despite the growing number of clinically approved AI algorithms, the process of adopting such applications and software in healthcare facilities is slow and cumbersome.

MedCAD solves this by deploying new AI applications in the healthcare sector more quickly and efficiently through its own platform. Developed by Lithuanian software producer SOFTNETA, MedCAD was initally introduced in Lithuanian hospitals.

It has since been installed in other medical facilities worldwide, with the goal of providing universal access to medical imaging and optimising healthcare services.

Beneficiaries:

‘We strongly believe there to be a great clinical demand for Softneta’s new initiative, MedCAD. Our organisation recognises the project MedCAD as a very high potential project with large added value for us, other medical device manufacturers, hospitals, healthcare units, AI developers, medical professionals and society.’

– Anders Nordell, CEO of Collective Minds Radiology

‘Osimis has decided to migrate customers who need a viewer for medical purposes to MedDream and has already integrated MedDream based on MedCAD technology in its Lify product. Softneta has convinced us with its flexibility to meet the technological and business needs of its customers and partners.’

– Frédéric Lambrechts, CEO of Osimis

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Medical Image Processing, Computerized Diagnostic and Clinical Decision Support” is EUR 699 820, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 419 892 through the “EU Structural Funds & Investments” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
