Actions speak louder than words! 🌟 We took this advice to heart when organising the very first 1MTN Experience Trip in Uganda 🇺🇬 for our partners and investors, giving them a firsthand look at our operations. We had six action-packed days: 🌿 Visiting the project site and meeting the on-the-ground team 🎓 Learning about bamboo 🌍 Attending the East Africa Carbon Markets Forum 🌄 Taking in the beauty of Uganda's nature A big thank you to everyone who joined us on this adventure! 🙌 🎥Watch the throwback video for a glimpse of this unforgettable experience, and who knows, maybe we'll see each other next time?! #1MTN #CarbonRemoval #Bamboo #ClimateAction
About us
1MTN is a pioneering agroforestry company dedicated to transforming landscapes and livelihoods across East Africa through nature-based solutions. Leveraging the power of carbon markets, we develop and implement projects that restore degraded lands while generating carbon removal credits and producing essential resources like food crops, sustainable biomass, and timber. Our projects focus on bamboo—a regenerative woody grass and climate superhero. We work closely with local communities to address the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development. Our activities contribute to 8 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our HQ is based in Tallinn, Estonia, with boots-on-the-ground teams in Uganda and Kenya.

Bamboo - a real climate superhero 💚👇 When it comes to bamboo in Uganda, the country has two species native to Uganda - Oxytenanthera abyssinica and Oldeania Alpina - along with the naturalised Bambusa Vulgaris. 🎋🇺🇬 #1mtn #bamboo #carbonremoval

Field update! 🌱 The first harvesting period has arrived, and here is a proud sneak peek into our on-the-ground operations before the real harvesting hustle begins. 🌟 🌽 Maize is looking fantastic 🥜 Groundnuts are thriving. 🌻 Test sunflowers are blooming. And do you spot the bee 🐝 buzzing around? Besides the successful crops, the most important lesson from this pilot is that bamboo really thrives with intercropping. 🎋 💚 Hats off to our dedicated on-the-ground team! Alistair Amendi Thaddeus Businge and others 🙌 PS! Check out our blog to read about how and why 1 MTN applies agroforestry practices to the carbon project. Throwback to last month when we had the pleasure of welcoming Patrícia Silva to our project site and introducing her to the on-the-ground team. 🌍 Patricia, taking a break from her work at Satgana, a Climate Tech Venture Capital firm, is currently travelling the Global South to experience CDR projects firsthand and understand their day-to-day operations in depth. Patricia, it was a joy to have you with us! Thank you! 🌟 Read Patricia's takeaway from the project site below. 📝
🎋 What a privilege to visit the groundbreaking 1MTN project in Uganda! 🇺🇬 Anete Garoza and Kristjan Raude 🌍 founded 1MTN with the aim of restoring 1 million hectares of degraded land by 2030 using native bamboo, removing over 1 million tons of carbon per project and providing significant community benefits for generations to come. I met Bob, Rob and their dedicated team on-site. 📈 Highlights: - 40-year Project: 10 000 hectare project under validation using Verra VM0047 methodology, aiming for a self-sustaining forest with biodiversity and intercropping for national consumption. - Current Progress: 400 hectares planted since August 2023, piloted intercropping food garden site and introduced four indigenous trees close to extinction in Uganda. - Future Plans: Scaling up the project tenfold and exploring additional sites in East Africa. 💡 Did you know? Bamboo is the fastest-growing biomass crop, absorbs 40% more CO2 than average trees AND enhances groundwater levels, reducing the need for intercrop watering during dry seasons. 💧 🏫 Community Prosperity: The project improves the livelihoods of community groups, benefiting nearly 30,000 households with an overall 10 000 hectare project: - Creates permanent, seasonal, and indirect jobs. - Distributes crops to schools and supports local markets. - Provides clean water, solar energy, primary education, and sustainable agriculture practices – through their Foundation. 🔥 Challenges: - Surveillance: Need cameras and sensors to prevent theft and fires. Bush burning for hunting has been an issue, and an attempted theft of a solar panel left the community without access to water for a month. - Logistics: Access to electric bodas (bikes) and renewable energy solutions would optimise operations. - High Initial Costs: Projects can’t be developed without carbon financing. High land taxes, legal due diligence and other set-up costs like nurseries and fencing need to be covered before the project becomes self-sustaining after 1-2 years. 🌱 Opportunities: - Enhance Carbon Removal: Seeking partnerships with biomass-to-energy and biochar producers to utilise the project’s biomass waste effectively. - Financing: Exploring various financing agreements, including carbon forward and financing partners, as well as supportive national policies for climate project funding. 1MTN is paving the way for strong sustainable development and community empowerment in Uganda. I am excited to see this project grow! 🌳Reach out if you can support 💚 Alistair Amendi I hope to meet you in my next visit! There is a huge opportunity in carbon markets, but more trust is needed! 🌿 One of the key takeaways from last week's discussion on opportunities and advancements of voluntary carbon markets with Tarmo Virki on NatureBacked podcast series is the necessity for trust. 🎙️ However, this doesn't mean trusting blindly in the projects and solutions available. The voluntary carbon markets space is complex, with various methodologies, projects, and nuances. Navigating this market requires investing time in learning and understanding to avoid getting lost or overwhelmed to see and recognise impact and potential. For more insights, listen to the podcast episode below. 👇 PS! If you're not familiar with the NatureBacked newsletter and podcast hosted by the superb journalist and storyteller Tarmo Virki, with a keen focus on climate and sustainability, now might be the time to correct this error. ✨ With Anete Garoza #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction #1MTN #Uganda
