    We interviewed another superstar of our current deeptech batch - CLYZA! It’s a startup developing a disruptive solution for the #semiconductor industry to replace #graphite with recyclable metal carbide crucibles for the growth of silicon carbide. 🌍 What inspired you to start this company? Almost four years ago, everything started with a bold idea to launch Silicon Carbide (SiC) production in Estonia. SiC became the cornerstone of our journey due to its significant impact on reducing energy consumption and helping save our planet.     International Energy Agency (IEA) released Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2024 this May, marking #graphite as a mineral with high risk-score: 1️⃣ Graphite demand is to quadruple by 2040 compared to 2023, mostly due to battery deployment for EVs and grid storage. 2️⃣ Over 90% of battery-grade graphite will originate from China in 2030. 3️⃣ Graphite shows one of the highest risk scores for the EU market due to geopolitical risks. UP Catalyst produces graphite and carbon #nanomaterials from CO₂ emissions and is scaling up fast. 1️⃣ We utilise CO₂ to produce valuable carbon materials (including battery-grade). 2️⃣ We remove dependence on #Chinese production and geopolitical situation, making supply reliable and prices predictable. 3️⃣ CO₂ footprint for UP Catalyst graphite is 0.07kg/CO₂-eq vs 13.8 kg industry average. For carbon nanotubes the difference is even bigger: 0.7kg/CO₂-eq instead of 170 kg! This May, UP Catalyst transitioned to a ton-scale production.     The Crucial Importance of Semiconductor Education: A Global Imperative In my 25 years in the semiconductor industry, I’ve come to realize that one of our most important responsibilities is to educate the world about the origins and manufacturing process of these tiny, yet incredibly powerful devices. It’s not just about showcasing our technological prowess; it’s about fostering a deeper understanding of the complex global ecosystem that underpins our modern way of life. Semiconductors are the bedrock of the digital age, enabling countless technological marvels that we often take for granted. However, the process of creating these chips is far from simple. It involves an intricate dance of precision, innovation, and global collaboration, with supply chains spanning multiple continents and geopolitical boundaries. As I’ve navigated the complexities of this industry, I’ve seen firsthand how a single disruption in the semiconductor supply chain can send shockwaves through the global economy. That’s why it’s crucial that we educate policymakers, business leaders, and the general public about the strategic importance of semiconductor manufacturing and the need for resilient, diversified supply chains.     Impact and sustainability from advanced materials and technologies

    From time to time I present the 30 year stories of advanced materials from research to societal use. It takes like 30 years to go from research to market. A paying market. A nice example is the white LED: That is based on the research for the nitride material that emits blue light. Originating from the research by Isamu Akasaki (Nobel prize in physics 2014). That is great work, and I use this as example in my training of research to business, and when I present how research can be presented in larger contexts such as snart specialisation strategy, values for business and sustainability by digitalization (tokenization, Web3 wallets, embedded sustainability accounting, etc. I have seen silicon carbide research go to market, from 1990s to the commercial one today. I believe that alternative applications based on silicon arbide will find their way. Just takes little longer. In 2010 I initiated the research in Europe on fluorecent silicon carbide for a white LED. The LED concept was proposed by Satoshi Kamiyama, and the method for sublimation epitaxy that we developed was perfect for exploring the light emission by doping and growth. So it happened that I became involved in research with the great scientists at Meijo University, and we have published jointly about the silicon carbide. Some joint papers, a technology transfer and some things have changed since then. The light emission is there but not so strong. But it can be used to trigger functions on the surface when they are modified for other purposes. That is one example how wafer scale SiC can come into renewed research again.
