🌊 Cybersecurity on the High Seas: Insights from the SORTA Conference 🌊 At the recent SORTA Conference in Zadar, Croatia, our Waterways Safety Management researcher Ahmed Nasr and Professor Pentti Kujala presented groundbreaking insights into maritime cybersecurity with their paper, "Exploring Historical Maritime Cyber-Attacks and Introducing Maritime Security Operations Center (M-SOC) as a Solution to Mitigate Them." 📄🔍 Their work highlighted the vulnerability of vital digital systems like AIS and ECDIS to cyber threats that could disrupt maritime operations or even endanger vessel safety ⚠️🚢. To address this, they introduced the Maritime Security Operations Center (M-SOC)—a proactive solution designed to monitor, detect, and respond to threats in real-time, safeguarding the industry in the digital age. 🛡️🌐 This presentation sparked important discussions on the urgency of cybersecurity in maritime operations, especially as digital and autonomous navigation systems become more prevalent 🤖📡. A safer digital future for maritime requires robust defenses like M-SOC to protect our vessels and crews. 🌊🛳️ #Cybersecurity #MaritimeSafety #DigitalMaritime #EstonianMaritimeAcademy

🎉 Today, the Estonian Maritime Academy celebrates its 105th anniversary! Maritime education in Estonia has a long and rich history, dating back to 1715, when the first maritime school was established in Tallinn, followed by one in Narva. Over the years, maritime schools have operated in various locations across Estonia – from Heinaste and Pärnu to Kuressaare, Paldiski, Tallinn, Käsmu, Narva, and even Tartu. Generations of students and educators have contributed to the development of maritime education in Estonia. Throughout these 105 years, the academy has navigated through different eras to reach where it stands today. Among us are those who joined the academy only recently, as well as those who have dedicated decades of their careers here. Each individual has played a part in the academy's growth, shaping the Estonian Maritime Academy as it is today. Our mission as an educational institution extends beyond maritime training; it encompasses shaping young people’s knowledge, culture, worldview, and values. We aim to be a recognized international center of competence, bringing together the entire maritime sector. As part of Tallinn University of Technology, we are committed to offering top-class maritime education through cutting-edge technology while keeping maritime traditions alive. Together forward to the coming years! 🌊 #EstonianMaritimeAcademy105 #MaritimeEducation #MaritimeTraditions #CenterOfExcellence #MaritimeAcademy

🌍 On October 9th, the Estonian Maritime Academy’s director Roomet Leiger participated in the prestigious Presidents' Forum during the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) Annual General Assembly 2024, hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The forum was led by Rear Admiral Francis McDonald, President of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. This year's forum focused on critical issues facing the global maritime industry, including: 🚢 Protecting Mariners – addressing safety and awareness related to SASH and the growing risks in contested waters. 🌊 Promoting the Maritime Industry – strategies for engaging the younger generation and promoting maritime education through IAMU. 🔮 Providing for the Future – the role of AI in maritime education and how universities can use the Global Maritime Professional Body of Knowledge (GMP-BoK) to prepare the next generation of mariners. Our director’s participation highlights EMERA’s commitment to staying at the forefront of maritime education and ensuring that our programs meet the evolving demands of the industry. #IAMU2024 #MaritimeEducation #MaritimeLeadership #EstonianMaritimeAcademy #InnovationAtSea #AIInMaritime

🚢✨Our students recently had the exceptional opportunity to visit Holland America Line’s flagship, M/S Rotterdam at Port of Tallinn. The excitement was immense and everyone was deeply grateful for this unique experience. 🙌 As one student shared: “The 3-hour tour of this luxurious vessel flew by in an instant. Our guide, a cadet from the Netherlands currently completing his internship on the ship, provided fascinating insights into every area. His dual expertise in navigation and marine engineering was particularly impressive!” Highlights from the visit included the pristine engine room, the wide corridors for crew movement, outdoor sports decks, numerous relaxation areas with pools, beautifully decorated spaces adorned with art, and, of course, the grand ship’s bridge. The visit gave us a comprehensive look into life aboard the ship, both from the perspective of the crew and the cruise guests. #MaritimeEducation #HollandAmericaLine #MSRotterdam #StudentExperience #EstonianMaritimeAcademy

In Memoriam: 30 years since the M/S Estonia tragedy On September 27, 1994, the M/S Estonia departed from the 10th pier of Tallinn's port at the B-terminal, never to return. On that fateful night, 852 lives were lost. The Broken Line memorial stands as a poignant reminder of those who perished, symbolizing the abrupt end of so many lives. Each year, we at the Estonian Maritime Academy honor their memory and reflect on the profound impact this event has had on Estonia, our maritime community, and the wider world. Let us pause and remember those who were lost at sea, and reaffirm our commitment to maritime safety, ensuring that such tragedies are never forgotten and that lessons are carried forward. We will never forget. 🌿

📢 What is the future of maritime education? 🌊 At the XX International Maritime Conference, the panel discussion "The Future of Maritime Education" focus was to explore the direction maritime educational institutions and the industry should take over the next decade to prepare the workforce of tomorrow. In her conference opening remarks, Kadri Land, President of the Estonian Shipowners Association, highlighted the importance of ensuring the maritime sector remains human-driven, even as technology and artificial intelligence advance. With the global maritime industry employing over 1.8 million seafarers, the demand for well-rounded professionals who can navigate both emerging technologies and sustainability challenges is increasing. But as one panelist noted, future maritime experts must grasp some fundamentals early on—including the simple fact that the water is wet—a crucial mindset as they navigate the complexities of the industry. Panel experts Markku Mylly, Māris Cīrulis, Alco Weeke and Valentin Bratkov, led by Vahur Ausmees, explored how maritime education can evolve to meet this demand and attract the brightest minds to the field. As maritime education adapts, how can we ensure it keeps pace with the industry’s changing needs?
