Port of Tallinn’s CEO, Valdo Kalm, shares his views on the future of the maritime sector and how it boosts the Estonian maritime economy. Alongside sustainable solutions for achieving climate neutrality and international cooperation, such as the Green Corridor initiative between Tallinn and Helsinki, Estonia is creating new opportunities with a €25 million investment in ship conversions. The average useful lifespan of ships is about 30-50 years, depending on the type, docks, and maintenance. This is a long-term investment, meaning vessels will need to be rebuilt due to the pressure of environmental regulations. As a result, there is an opportunity to create a ship conversion center or retrofit hub in Estonia, which would bring direct economic benefits to the country and its maritime sector while enabling ports’ existing infrastructure to be used more efficiently. Port of Tallinn’s Muuga harbor and Old City Harbor hold the necessary quays for this, and we are ready to look into the oppotunity. The FIN-EST Green Corridor initiative has made significant progress toward establishing a climate-neutral maritime connection between #Finland and #Estonia. In early October, the Steering Committee approved 19 joint projects aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of ferry journeys across the Gulf of Finland. These projects focus on key areas, including: • Transitioning to green fuels, ensuring availability while addressing safety regulations. • Developing zero-emission port infrastructure, including service vehicles and machinery. • Harmonizing waste management systems to enhance sustainable recycling and waste handling. • Implementing digital tools to monitor and reduce fuel consumption in ferries. • Exploring carbon capture technologies to further minimize emissions. Promoting cycling travel, improving the experience for passengers traveling by bicycle. Supported by key stakeholders such as the cities of #Helsinki and #Tallinn, Port of Helsinki Ltd and Port of Tallinn, major shipping companies like Rederi AB, Eckerö Line, Tallink Grupp, Viking Line, and the Kliimaministeerium / Ministry of Climate of Estonia, with strong backing from Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, this initiative highlights the power of collaborative action in driving real change. Together, we are not only reducing environmental impacts but also enhancing competitiveness and connectivity between Finland and Estonia. Valdo Kalm, CEO of the Port of Tallinn, shared his optimism: "These 19 joint projects clearly demonstrate our commitment to creating a sustainable and climate-neutral maritime corridor. By working across borders and sectors, we are tackling complex challenges and aiming to serve as a model for future green shipping initiatives worldwide." As one of 60 global green maritime corridors, announced by the Global Maritime Forum, the FIN-EST Green Corridor is setting a benchmark for sustainability in the maritime sector with concrete projects already underway. We are committed to continuing innovation and sustainability in maritime transport for a cleaner, greener future! #GreenCorridor #Sustainability #PortOfTallinn #ClimateNeutral #MaritimeInnovation #Estonia #Finland #CleanTransport #GreenShipping #PortOfHelsinki #FutureForward

The 20th International Maritime Conference was once again an impactful and informative event. The participation of all the major maritime organizations and foreign guests was valuable for networking and future planning for all of us. The CEO of Port of Tallinn, Valdo Kalm, gave an overview of the Green Corridors project and the role and importance of ports as energy hubs. Other key topics included: Very knowledgeable opening remarks about the maritime sector from the Estonian Minister of Infrastructure, Vladimir Svet. Jorgen Bjerre (European Commission) discussed the role of ports and inland waterways in transitioning to new energies. Arnstein Eknes (DNV) shared insights on the future of shipping, with a focus on special vessels. Tom O. Kleppestø (Maritime Oslofjord Alliance) highlighted how to attract, retain, and motivate top talent in the maritime sector. Kaupo Läänerand (Kliimaministeerium / Ministry of Climate of Estonia) presented Estonia’s major maritime projects to enhance competitiveness. Tarvi-Carlos Tuulik (Tallink Grupp) explored the implications of Fit for 55 and the choices for shipowners. The key takeaway from the conference is, yet again, that change begins within ourselves. We do not have to wait until new and better fuels and solutions are ready; we can make adjustments to our habits now to save energy and effort. Till next year! #PortOfTallinn #MaritimeConference #GreenTransition #SmartMaritime #Shipping #Ports #MaritimeNetworks

Last week, in collaboration with the City of Tallinn, Port of Tallinn hosted a discussion day as part of the Tallinn Urban Festival. The event covered the following topics: ◾ Opening the waterfront: collaborative creation between the port and urban space Discussion participants: Madle Lippus (Deputy Mayor of Tallinn), Valdo Kalm (Port of Tallinn), Kadi Pärnits (Ülemiste City), Marko Uueda (Capital Mill) ◾ Making Tallinn more accessible and improving access to the waterfront Discussion participants: Pärtel-Peeter Pere (Deputy Mayor of Tallinn), Raul Kalvo (Mobility Agency/Inphysica), Kaido Padar (TLT), Piret Üts (Port of Tallinn) ◾ Green future: energy in the urban environment Discussion participants: Robert Kitt (Utilitas), Ivo Palu (TalTech), Taavi Tilk (Port of Tallinn) ◾ Emerging harbour district: everyday joys and challenges Discussion participants: Sander Andla (Head of Central District), Ann Tarkin (local resident), Teana Baskirtseva (Manager of Nautica Center) Port of Tallinn has a unique opportunity to develop a new city district along the waterfront in the heart of #Tallinn, and we invite developers to collaborate on creating this new waterfront district. Key takeaways from the discussions: - The City of Tallinn is focused on developing the city center to support a "15-minute city" concept, with a shared goal of opening up the seaside. - It was noted that the planning process has been lengthy. However, as Deputy Mayor Madle Lippus highlighted, recent reviews of city processes are expected to streamline and accelerate future developments. - Emphasis was placed on improving public transport and the street network, which are critical for accessibility. The Old City Harbour will soon have better connections, with a new tram line set to operate by January 2025 and additional bus routes being introduced. - There is significant potential to enhance the network of bicycle lanes across Tallinn, ensuring safety and encouraging more residents to cycle. - Sea water presents a valuable resource for the future, particularly for heating and cooling. Utilitas is already developing a new heat pump plant in Paljassaare, which will use cleaned wastewater and sea water for district heating. The Old City Harbour will also implement a district heating and cooling system based on sea water in collaboration with Utilitas. - Efficient electricity usage is crucial. By 2030, harbours must be ready to provide onshore power to large cruise vessels, which will require substantial power during the summer cruise season. Meanwhile, heat pump plants will demand significant energy in winter. This creates a win-win situation in terms of seasonal power distribution. Paldiski Ettevõtjate Liit, along with its members Lääne-Harju Vald, Port of Tallinn, Alexela, and Enefit Green, held the Paldiski Investment Conference “Different Paldiski” for the seventh time last week. This year’s topic was “Development Engines of a Sustainable Living Environment,” mainly focusing on Paldiski but extending to all of Estonia. Investments in the local industry, such as the projects being undertaken by Port of Tallinn and Alexela, can significantly boost local economic development and improve living standards. Attracting strategic industries to Paldiski can create jobs, sustain community growth, and, of course, boost the Estonian economy in general. Our Head of Business Development and Member of the Management Board, Rene Pärt, stated at the conference that we see new growth potential and interest from potential investors not only in the ports of Port of Tallinn but also for the larger community and economy, with three HUB concepts: - Ports as an industrial HUB - production and added value services for long-term stability. - Alternative energy HUB - alternative fuel production, storage and bunkering, offshore wind development, etc. - Retrofit HUB - a base to cater to the exponentially increasing ship conversion market. Port of Tallinn’s CEO, Valdo Kalm, said that the competition for foreign investors is intense, and we need to consider combining the forces of the public and private sectors in our sales efforts. The developments have to be balanced with the economic ambitions and those of the local community and environment. The insights from the conference provide a roadmap for how Paldiski and similar regions can harness industrial growth to create sustainable and thriving local economies. #Paldiski #SustainableDevelopment #IndustrialGrowth #LocalEconomy #BusinessDevelopment #AlternativeEnergy #Innovation #SustainableLiving #GreenEnergy #RenewableEnergy #InfrastructureDevelopment #InvestinEstonia #EnergyHub #RetrofitHub #IndustrialHub

In the second quarter, Tallinna Sadam earned 32 million euros in sales revenue and 4 million euros in profit. The revenue for six months was 60 million euros and the profit exceeded 9 million euros. In the second quarter, the volume of investments increased to 7 million euros, in the first half of the year we invested a total of 25 million euros. In the second quarter, sales revenue (10%), adjusted EBITDA (27%) and profit (201%) increased year-on-year. Semiannually, the revenue increased (4%) and cost reduction resulted in positive changes for adjusted EBITDA (9%) and profit (32%). “Considering the general global background and macroeconomic environment, we can be satisfied with the results," comments Valdo Kalm, the Chairman of the Management Board. "The number of passengers has increased, and we see stabilization in terms of cargo volumes. In terms of goods, ro-ro and container volumes have shown the most increase. We are pleased with the efficiency of operations - we have managed to reduce operating costs and we hope to continue in this direction in the future. In the long term, the company's operations will be positively affected by winning the tender for ferry services and signing the chartering contract for the multi-functional icebreaker Botnica for the next five years. The financial results of six months were affected by an increase in the number of passengers and stabilized cargo volumes. In shipping, both ferries and the icebreaker Botnica showed growth. Botnica started offshore works this year earlier than last year and contributed to the increase in revenue. The group's operating costs have decreased, while financial costs have increased due to high Euribor rates. Port of Tallinn’s CEO Valdo Kalm and CFO Andrus Ait presented the financial results of the Group at webinars on the 12th of August, in Estonian and in English. Our new Head of Investor Relations Angelika Annus was also introduced at the webinar. Find the recordings: EST: https://lnkd.in/d5bB76Gw ENG: https://lnkd.in/dvjq_T6g
