At Viking Line, we’re continuously working to reduce our environmental impact. Almost all waste generated onboard our vessels is transported ashore for recycling, reuse or composting. ♻️ During the spring, we began collecting coffee grounds as material for garden soil in partnership with VG EcoFuel. The recycling of coffee grounds reduces the need for virgin peat moss in soil production. The coffee grounds are then used as raw material for Finnish-based Berner Oy´s GreenCare range of fertilizer products. In addition, our restaurants’ cooking oil is used to make hydrotreated vegetable oil – HVO, a biological substitute for diesel. “The recycling of cooking oil and coffee grounds is a good example of material flows based on a circular economy, which we are actively trying to create with our partners. What is essential here is that the materials are recycled together – that way, transport is more efficient and emissions per unit collected are reduced”, says our Sustainability Manager, Dani Lindberg. 🌍 #vikingline #sustainability #recycling

An unusual visit to the office. Ten doctors and healthcare workers from Ukraine are currently on the Åland Islands for rest and rehabilitation. This is the 15th Border Guard Brigade, which has been working at various locations on the front lines since the war broke out in 2022. Viking Line has supported the brigade in various ways, including donating buses and other supplies. The presentation the group gave was moving. We are talking about a war involving all conceivable and cruel horrors. #vikingline #stopthewar

This week the national Food Waste Week takes place in Finland. Through a variety of measures, we have succeeded in reducing food waste on our vessels by 20-30%. 🍽️🌍 Our newest initiative is a collaboration we have recently started with Generation Waste to reduce food waste further. The collaboration has started on our vessels Viking Glory and Viking Grace, where the food waste is now being monitored by new digital measurement tools. The goal of this is to monitor food waste more closely so that necessary adjustments can be made to further reduce it.
