Thrilled to share with you my new coauthored book... “This book offers a fascinating study of the Egyptian economy from 1952 to now. The prescriptions provided will be of value to not just those who work on Egypt but anybody with an interest in development policy.”― Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics and Carl Marks Professor of International Studies, Cornell University and former Chief Economist of the World Bank “This masterful analysis of Egypt’s policymaking over the past 70 years is an important contribution to understanding how ‘crises, disruptions and bad ideas’ have impeded the country from realizing its potential. Look to this book for key insights that can help pave the way for durable high-quality growth.”―Mohamed El-Erian, President, Queens’ College, Cambridge University “This is a brilliant case study of an important country. But much more than that, it is full of insights for Egypt and also an important contribution to our understanding of the political economy of growth and development.”―A. An insightful piece on Africa's power sector from Afreximbank's Trade Intelligence Solutions.......enjoy, and make it a point to follow Afreximbank Research for similar insightful pieces.. https://lnkd.in/d8X3GMbs
⚡ Africa’s power sector is at a pivotal juncture, positioned for significant transformation and growth in the coming years. Although non-hydro renewables are expected to lead the charge in terms of capacity growth (driven by decarbonization goals and abundant natural resources), thermal power capacity will maintain an important role in several markets across the continent, namely those endowed with coal and gas reserves. However, electricity output in central, eastern, and southern Africa will be dominated by hydropower, which (excluding South Africa) provides over 70% of the total power supply. 📈 One emerging trend in the power sector of North Africa is the modernization and digitalization of infrastructure. As countries in the region seek to enhance the efficiency, reliability and resilience of their power systems they are increasingly investing in smart grid technologies, advanced metering infrastructure and digital monitoring and control systems. This trend aims to optimize operations, reduce losses and improve consumer service delivery. ☀ West and Central Africa is the third-largest region in Africa in terms of total electricity generation. Nigeria is the dominant market, representing approximately 35% of the region’s total power generation in 2024. Moreover, the region boasts considerable potential for renewable energy development, including solar and wind resources. Regional initiatives and development funding will be crucial for the sector’s ongoing expansion. Source: Power Industry Outlook, 2024.
