The “S” shape formed as the pipe descends is essential to the process, and at the heart of this operation is a critical piece of equipment: the stinger. The stinger is a curved extension attached to the lay barge, supporting the pipeline as it exits the vessel and begins its descent toward the seabed. Acting as a guiding “arm,” it prevents excessive bending or stress that could compromise the pipe’s integrity. Here’s why the stinger role is so crucial in S-lay: 1️⃣ Stress Management: The curvature of the stinger is meticulously designed to reduce stress on the pipeline, especially at the “overbend” where the pipeline transitions from horizontal to downward.
