Suez Canal Authority Issues a Navigation Circular to Enhance Yacht Tourism and Develop Marine Tourism in the Red Sea. Discounts and Incentives for the Canal Transiting Yachts, in addition to Facilitation for Berthing and wintering Services at the Authority's Marinas The Suez Canal Authority has issued a new navigation circular (No. 4) of 2024 to promote yacht tourism and develop marine tourism in the Red Sea region by providing a bundle of facilitations and incentives for the Canal transiting yachts. This comes within the frame of the Authority's approach of pursuing flexible marketing policies aiming at encouraging yacht tourism in the area. The new circular takes effect as of the beginning of this November. The new circular grants yachts with a gross tonnage of 300 tons or more a range of facilitations, including the option to join the direct convoy of ships, as well as the opportunity for direct transit without waiting at the anchorage in the Great Lakes area, in line with the regulations outlined in the SC Rules of Navigation and the guidelines for the Canal transit. The new circular also indicates that yachts with a gross tonnage of less than 300 tons will receive a 20% discount on transit fees on the return voyage if they return from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean within 60 days of their outbound voyage. Additionally, the facilitations include a 20% discount on transit fees for yachts that undergo wintering in the Ismailia Yacht Marina for more than 90 days, applicable to the voyage during which the wintering occurred, whether that voyage is from the north or south. Furthermore, the circular grants a 50% discount on berthing fees for yachts with a gross tonnage of less than 300 tons at the Authority's Marinas in Port Said or Suez, at the canal entrances, provided that the yachts arrive at a suitable time for transit and do not require an overnight stay or any services (such as electricity or water) from the aforementioned marinas.

Adm. Ossama Rabiee, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, has met today, via video conference, with Mr. Guy Platten, Secretary-General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), and Mr. Neil Roberts, Head of Marine & Aviation at Lloyd's Market Association (LMA), to discuss the developments of the current situation in the Red Sea and Bab El-Mandeb region as well as their impact on the sustainability of global supply chains. This meeting comes as a continuation of the SCA’s efforts to open direct communication channels with the international maritime community through holding periodical meetings with senior executives of various international maritime organisations and shipping lines. At the outset, H.E Admiral Ossama Rabiee stressed the SCA's keenness to promote cooperation with all the international maritime organisations and institutions, and discuss with its clients the repercussions of the current crisis as well as to present insights on facing the different challenges linked to that crisis to minimise its impact on global trade. H.E. has also pointed out that the current crisis requires the consolidation of all efforts and the exchange of viewpoints on its repercussions as well as identifying its tangible impacts on global supply chains and all the sectors related to maritime transportation; including the maritime insurance sector which is witnessing an increase in insurance cost for vessels passing through the Red Sea and Bab El-Mandeb region. On his part, Mr. Guy Platten has expressed his appreciation of the SCA's efforts that are exerted towards achieving effective communication with all the key players in the maritime community. He emphasized the positive impact of communication on understanding the current conditions in the maritime transport market as well as the consecutive variables it witnesses. The Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has asserted the continuation of discussions with the SCA as a key partner and an invaluable maritime route for the stability and sustainability of global supply chains. He has also expressed his hopes for the end of the crisis to come as soon as possible due to the challenges it imposes on the sustainability of global supply chains. While Mr. Neil Roberts has clarified that the ongoing tensions in the Red Sea region impose numerous concerns among ship owners and shipping lines with regards to the safety of the vessels and crews which eventually leads to increased maritime insurance costs for vessels passing through. He has also stressed that for matters to go back to normal, there needs to be a de-escalation of the situation and a recovery of the international maritime community's confidence. #suezcanal

H.E. Admiral Ossama Rabiee, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, met with Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Admiral Rabiee added that the Suez Canal achieves savings in time and distance compared to alternative routes, which contributes to reducing fuel consumption by rates ranging from 10 to 90%, as well as the resulting reduction in harmful carbon emissions, noting in this regard that the Suez Canal contributed to reducing carbon emissions by 55.4 million tons during 2023, achieving a saving in fuel consumption of 16.9 million tons. SCA Chairman stressed that navigation in the Canal is regular and has not stopped at all, even for a single day, since the outbreak of the crisis, as the Suez Canal continues to provide its navigation services normally, in parallel with the SCA’s continued efforts to support its clients in order to reduce the impact of the current situation on them. Also, Admiral Rabiee reviewed the package of navigational and maritime services provided by SCA, which includes, in addition to pilotage services, Bunkering services, ship repair and maintenance services at SCA shipyards, marine ambulance services, marine salvage services, pollution control, and other services that the Canal-transiting vessels may need in normal and emergency circumstances, pointing out in this regard that the Suez Shipyard Company, affiliated to SCA, carried out maintenance and repair works of the dry bulk carrier “ZOGRAFIA” after it was attacked in the Red Sea. For his part, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), affirmed his keenness to strengthen joint cooperation relations with the Suez Canal Authority, appreciating the efforts made by the Authority in establishing effective communication with all concerned parties of the maritime transport market which is deemed as a essential approach to identify the needs, services and guarantees needed by ship owners and operators to ensure safe passage through the Suez Canal. The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) explained that the current situation in the Red Sea region impose many challenges on the global trade movement and the maritime transport market, in addition to their negative effects on the Suez Canal and the ports in the region. Dominguez stressed that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) supports freedom of navigation and calls for calm in the Red Sea region, as the IMO is also working to provide full support for the Suez Canal by sending a clear message to all its members that navigation in the Suez Canal is still open to everyone, especially in light of the logistical and security challenges faced by vessels which resort to going around the Cape of Good Hope, in addition to the environmental challenges posed by the Cape route as an unsustainable route for navigation traffic due to its lack of essential services. #suezcanal
