📢 📰 Fast Prediction of Rain Erosion in Wind Turbine Blades CIMNE researchers Dr. Juan Marcelo Gimenez, Dr. Sergio Idelsohn, and Dr. Eugenio Oñate are behind this recent article featured in the Special Column on the 7th Symposium on Computational Marine Hydrodynamics. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dD43nAPE 💡 WHAT IS IT ABOUT? The research introduces an innovative computational tool designed for fast and accurate prediction of rain erosion damage on wind turbine blades. This cutting-edge technology integrates Pseudo-Direct Numerical Simulations (P-DNS) with machine learning (ML) models, providing wind turbine operators with valuable insights for improved maintenance and operational efficiency. The tool predicts the remaining lifetime and quantifies erosion damage based on site-specific weather conditions. ✨ WHY IT MATTERS Wind turbines are crucial to the green energy transition, but environmental factors such as rain erosion significantly reduce their operational lifespan, particularly in offshore and high-rainfall areas. By developing this rapid prediction tool, CIMNE researchers are contributing to: ✔️ Extending turbine lifespan: Accurate prediction of erosion damage allows for timely maintenance and optimization of blade design and materials. ✔️ Improving operational efficiency: Wind farm operators can better schedule maintenance, reducing downtime and minimizing costly repairs. ✔️ Advancing sustainability: Extending the durability of wind turbines aligns with global goals to increase the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy sources. 🌍 We are committed to driving advancements in computational mechanics for renewable energy solutions. #CIMNE #Research #RenewableEnergy #WindTurbines #Sustainability #RainErosion #ComputationalMechanics #MachineLearning

    • A landscape featuring a row of wind turbines under a vast sky with scattered clouds. The turbines are positioned along a flat field with a narrow water canal running parallel to the path of the turbines. Patches of water puddles are visible on the ground, reflecting the sky, and there’s a sense of sustainable energy production in a rural setting.

I am thrilled to announce that I have graduated with a Double BSc in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) this July! Moreover, I am incredibly proud to announce that I successfully defended my Double BSc thesis titled "Preliminary Design of an Offshore Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine", a project closely tied to the Energy Transition in the Naval industry. This project was both challenging and rewarding, and I’m honored to share that it was awarded the highest grade, receiving a distinction! A huge thank you to my supervisor, Joel Jurado Granados, for your invaluable guidance and support throughout this journey. I also want to extend my gratitude to Compass Ingeniería y Sistemas SA for providing access to their software, which was instrumental while completing my project. Five years ago, I made the move to Barcelona to pursue my education in these fascinating fields. Now, I am excited to embark on the next chapter of my journey, as I have recently relocated to Copenhagen to begin my MSc program at DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way! Looking forward to what the future holds. 🚢✨
