IREC is the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research, Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya. IREC is a public research center ascribed to the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in which the Department of Research and Universities and the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN) also participate. IREC is a CERCA center and accredited as a TECNIO center. Created in 2008, it aims to contribute to the sustainable development of society and to increase the competitiveness of industry in the energy sector. The center develops research of excellence in the medium and long term, innovation and the development of new technological products and the dissemination of important knowledge and findings to the general public. IREC collaborates with the Government, universities and industry, and this is reflected in the structure of its Board of Trustees. 🔋 Main outcomes of the MARBEL H2020 project! 🔋 The MARBEL project designed new modular and recyclable #batteries for electric vehicles created for second-life use to reduce environmental impact, extend battery life, and optimize second-life applications. 🚀 Key breakthroughs include: ✅ Up to 60% recycled aluminum, cutting 777 kg of CO₂ emissions per battery pack ✅ Ultra-fast charging innovations with advanced cooling and optimization algorithms ✅ AI-driven Battery Management System (BMS) for predictive analytics & extended lifespan ✅ Flexible & modular design, enabling seamless adaptation for second-life applications Through cutting-edge eco-design principles and advanced recovery strategies, MARBEL is paving the way for a circular economy in the EV industry. Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program, the consortium is formed by 16 partners, led by Eurecat - Centro Tecnológico and the participation of IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, Applus+ IDIADA, FICOSA and OTC Engineering, among others. The participation of researchers from IREC involved the development of a cloud-connected wireless Battery Management System (BMS) that enables advanced control features using Artificial Intelligence approaches. Lluís Trilla, deputy head of the Power Systems group at IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, highlighted. “The target was to develop a smarter BMS to increase the battery performance while making a more compact system design by removing all cabling and wiring harnesses from the pack”. Un any més, IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya ha participat en l’#EspaiCiència 🔬 del Saló de l’Ensenyament, on hem pogut compartir amb estudiants d’ESO i Batxillerat la recerca que duem a terme a l’institut. 👉 EspaiCiència és una iniciativa impulsada per la Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació per fomentar futures vocacions científiques i tecnològiques entre els joves. En l’edició d’enguany, els assistents han pogut: 🔹 Aprendre i experimentar com l’energia de fonts sostenibles es genera, emmagatzema i distribueix en un taller demostratiu organitzat per Anna Magrasó i Princess Romero 🔹 Conèixer OxyBatt, un dels projectes coordinats per IREC, en el taller organitzat per AEInnova - Alternative Energy Innovations denominat "Termoelectricitat". Els tallers han atret nombrosos alumnes, tan interessats en disciplines científiques com en altres àmbits, amb ganes d’aprendre sobre les darreres tendències en el sector de l’energia. ⚡ 🌱 📢 També, vam rebre la visita del president de la Generalitat, Salvador Illa Roca, que juntament amb el director de la FCRI, Miquel Gómez Clares, va experimentar en primera persona l'energia d'aquest espai immersiu dedicat a la divulgació científica. 🚗⚡ Gran èxit de la #JornadaMOVEM: impulsant la innovació en bateries! 🔋♻️ Aquest dijous hem celebrat la jornada "Innovació en bateries per a una mobilitat sostenible" amb una gran participació i èxit rotund! Més de vuitanta professionals s’han reunit al Campus FPCAT-UPC de la Mobilitat Sostenible, a Martorell, per a compartir coneixement i impulsar la mobilitat del futur. La jornada ha començat amb la benvinguda de Jose Antonio Calero Martinez (Ph.D.) (AMES - Sintered metallic components) i David Gallegos (Campus FPCAT-UPC), seguida d’una ponència inspiradora de Riánsares López (ÒPTIMA ACCIÓ) sobre les principals conclusions dels Battery Innovation Days 2024. A la taula rodona de casos d’èxit hem comptat amb la participació de: 🔹 Jordi Jacas Biendicho (IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya) i Sylvia Cruz (Eurecat - Technology Centre) – Centre Battech, referent en R+D+i en bateries. 🔹 Baltasar López (MILLOR BATTERY), Alberto Gómez, PhD (FICOSA) i Carlos Muñoz (Gestamp) – Noves generacions de bateries. 🔹 Joan Valls Pérez (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) – Projecte BlockBatCE. 🔹 Noemi Rodríguez (SEAT S.A.) – Projecte Biometcri. 🚀 El IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya sigue avanzando en la excelencia investigadora en Europa 🌍 Queremos compartir los hitos alcanzados por el IREC en el programa #HorizonEurope, que nos consolida como un actor clave en la investigación e innovación energética. Durante el período 2023-2024: ✅ Hemos presentado más de 130 propuestas y obtenido 15 proyectos europeos valorados en aproximadamente 7M€, coordinando 6 de ellos. ✅ El @CDTI_innovacion nos ha reconocido como uno de los centros con mayor retorno en el programa Horizon Europe (2021-2023). ✅ En 2024, alcanzamos el hito de 100 proyectos financiados por la UE en los programas FP7, H2020 y Horizon Europe. ✅ Catalunya ha conseguido 1.015M€ en financiación europea, posicionándose como la tercera región más activa de Europa, y el IREC ha captado más de 13M€ en fondos Horizon Europe. Este éxito es fruto de una estrategia basada en: 🔹 La excelencia en la investigación. 🔹 Colaboraciones internacionales sólidas. 🔹 Alineación con las prioridades de innovación y sostenibilidad en Europa. La comunidad energética Energia del Prat impulsa un proyecto de almacenamiento compartido en comunidades de vecinos y vecinas. 🔋 ⏩ Se trata de coger electricidad cuando la red esté descongestionada y la energía sea barata, para "suministrarla cuando la red esté congestionada y la energía sea cara", explica Joan Herrera. Esta iniciativa ha recibido el apoyo del Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico dentro de la convocatoria de acceso al banco de pruebas regulatorio para el fomento de la investigación y la innovación en el sector eléctrico (Sandbox).

EHAWEDRY's last meeting before the end of the project! 🎉 In March 2025, we gathered at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Enginyeria Industrial de Barcelona to assess the progress of the final prototype and strategize the next steps for this potentially groundbreaking technology. 🎯 What we achieved & our success 🎯 EHAWEDRY pioneers an innovative method of converting waste heat into electricity using electrochemical capacitors and advanced materials. 🔥By focusing on low-grade heat recovery, it provides a more efficient and mechanical-free alternative to conventional energy conversion systems. The work doesn't end with EHAWEDRY, but the project sets the way towards the full development of a breakthrough technology which has the potential to transform energy recovery processes and enhance sustainability.
