We all know the Cívitas Metropolitano, the current home of Atlético de Madrid. However, what some are beginning to forget is that this stadium was built on the only reinforced concrete stand of the old athletics stadium of the Community of Madrid. Commonly known as "La Peineta," this structure had an imposing presence in Madrid's urban landscape. Antonio Cruz, accompanied by photographs from Duccio Malagamba, reflects on this structure in this SCALAE capsule, part of the "Grada | Geografías" series, noting how it remains almost unchanged as the west stand of the Cívitas Metropolitano today. On the day of its inauguration, Olympic medalist Kevin Young remarked, “I had never run in such a strange place". Inaugural session of the course "Interventions on Existing Buildings," organized as part of the summer courses at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), and held in the building restored by Cruz and Ortiz for Banco Santander (formerly Mercantil). This three-day forum, sponsored by the Banco Santander Foundation and led by architect Antonio Ortiz, focuses on debates surrounding architecture, specifically interventions and restorations of existing buildings. The forum centers on the challenges and sensitivities involved in such interventions, especially supported by local examples like the rehabilitation of the building on Hernán Cortés and the upcoming intervention at Faro Santander, led by architect David Chipperfield. Among the participants in this gathering are prominent figures in architecture such as Rafael Moneo, Kees Kaan, and other architects. Following the inauguration, a guided tour of the building restored by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos took place, and it was announced that Ana Botín, president of Banco Santander, will close the event at the Palacio de La Magdalena. Countdown to the remodelling of the Cartuja stadium The remodelling of the Cartuja stadium, designed by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, will increase its capacity by 12,442 seats, reaching a total of 71,374 spectators. The project includes the elimination of the athletics track, the depression of the playing field and the construction of new stands. In this first phase, accessibility will be improved and new spectator areas, toilets and services will be provided. For later phases, work will be carried out on the urbanisation of the exterior area, the façade, the refurbishment and enlargement of the VIP areas, as well as the digitalisation of the facilities. The works, which will begin in mid-July this year, will enable the stadium to meet the UEFA and FIFA standards required for the 2030 World Cup to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. With the expansion, the capacity of the Cartuja stadium will rise from fifth to third place nationally in terms of conditioning and only surpassed by the Nou Camp and the Santiago Bernabeu and ahead of the Cívitas Metropolitano (Atlético de Madrid) and the Benito Villamarín (Real Betis). The Cartuja stadium, also built by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, was inaugurated on 5 May 1999 for that year’s World Athletics Championships. Its original design included an athletics track and had an initial capacity of 57,619 spectators. In addition to hosting the World Championships, it has hosted numerous sporting and non-sporting events throughout its 25-year history. More information at the link: https://lnkd.in/dYSWKin2

Seville – Santa Justa Train Station, designed by Cruz y Ortiz, breaks passenger record in 2023. Passenger traffic at Seville – Santa Justa Train Station reached an all-time record in 2023, with more than 10.1 million passengers per year. This figure represents a significant growth compared to previous records, including the numbers obtained during the 1992 Universal Exhibition. The station, designed by our study, inaugurated in 1991 and has shown a steady increase in transport demand, partially due to the entry of new competitors in the liberalisation of high speed rail network. This achievement highlights the important role of Seville – Santa Justa train station as an important national and regional transport centre.
