🌍 Highlights from the EIONET Annual Communication Group Meeting at the University of Málaga! 🌿 On October 24-25, 2024, the European Topic Centre on Spatial Analysis and Synthesis of the University of Málaga (ETC-UMA) hosted representatives from the European Environment Agency (EEA), National Institutions across 38 countries, the European Commission, the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD), and our partners at the European Topic Centre on Data Integration and Digitalisation (ETC-DI). This encounter, closely organised with EEA and the MITERD, served as a vital platform for tackling our shared challenges in environmental communication throughout Europe. We explored innovative strategies to enhance outreach, shared best practices, and examined cutting-edge technologies that can transform our communication efforts. #ETCDI ´s work was highlighted at the marketplace organized by ETC-UMA and the Austrian Environment Agency, that showcased novel digital tools designed to present data transparently and interactively. Such tools empower diverse stakeholders to engage effectively with the information. Our discussions stirred fresh ideas, identified critical needs, and underscored the importance of collaboration in driving impactful communication of knowledge and data for a variety of stakeholders. The participants also enjoyed a site visit to Monte de Gibralfaro, where we discussed the importance of urban biodiversity and recreational spaces. During this visit, ETC-UMA presented the Econecta Gibralfaro project, implemented in partnership with the Municipality of Málaga, reaffirming our commitment to protecting urban green spaces. 🌳 🐿 🦎 This two-day encounter was a significant step forward in our mission to promote clearer and more effective environmental communication across Europe. 🌳 Mediterranean forests are under severe threat from climate change, despite recent increases in forest cover. The Mediterranean basin is the second most affected region globally, and the growing impacts on forest ecosystems will have far-reaching consequences for local communities' livelihoods. 🌍 #StrategyMedFor initiative, led by ETC-UMA, launched in January 2024, aims to develop a 10-year Strategy for the Sustainable Management of Mediterranean Forests (SSMMF) to enhance biodiversity restoration and climate resilience. 🔑 Key insights from our recent workshop in Greece : • Traditional tools like agroforestry, prescribed burning, and rotational grazing are essential for sustainable forest management, particularly in reducing the risk of forest fires. • Engaging the business sector is crucial for long-term success in implementing sustainable forestry practices. • Local tree nurseries with native seedlings play a vital role in restoration efforts and must receive continued investment to maintain biodiversity. • Restoration strategies should be site-specific and context-driven, ensuring targeted and effective outcomes. • The IBP - Index of Biodiversity Potential - is an effective tool for assessing biodiversity health worth being integrated into Mediterranean forest management practices. The field visit to Samaria National Park underscored the importance of hands-on implementation and institutional collaboration. While there is still much to be done, this workshop has built a strong foundation for future progress. 🌱 #Forestry #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Biodiversity #MediterraneanForests #Conservation #Resilience ETC-UMA, CIHEAM - MAI CHANIA Conference Center, Istituto Oikos , Association Internationale des Forêts Méditerranéennes #Medforval, #UniversiyOfSarajevo , CNPF - Centre national de la propriété forestière, #NationalParkGalicica, StrategyMedFor, Interreg Euro-MED Programme, #NaturalHeritageMission, #naturerestoration, #interregeuromed #Forestry #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Biodiversity #MediterraneanForests #Conservation

🌊📊 We’re excited to announce the publication of the new report "Mapping the Impact of Blue Tourism in the Mediterranean: Vulnerability Assessment of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems." Produced by IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation with our support within the framework of the Blue Tourism Initiative, this report uncovers how tourism impacts our precious Mediterranean biodiversity and what we can do to protect it. Key recommendations emerging from the report: 🔹 We need more detailed information on local tourism activities to overcome data gaps 🔹 Limited data in non-EU countries affects pressure assessments 🔹 Increasing protected areas and establishing effective management measures in non-EU regions is needed 🔹 Implement Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) to balance environmental, economic, and social goals 🔹 Adopt best practices like improved anchoring techniques, eco-mooring systems, and better tourism management strategies 🔹 Support Mediterranean networks and conservation programs focused on species and habitat protection Explore our report to understand the impacts of maritime traffic and how we can better protect these vital marine species. #bluetourism #Mediterranean https://lnkd.in/dv2EnDqr
