  • 🛤️ Paving the road for the Green List in Tunisia and Catalonia 🟢 To strengthen the implementation of the IUCN Green List programme in the Mediterranean, two #IUCNGreenList training workshops were held in Hammamet, #Tunisia (21-22 January), and Barcelona, #Spain (24 January).   Improving Protected and Conserved Areas in the Maghreb The workshop in Tunisia, co-organised with WWF North Africa, brought together national administrations, protected area (PA) representatives and authorities with the #Maghreb Expert Assessment Group for the Green List (#EAGL) to receive training and updates on the Green List standard and tool. Participants included the Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment; and Tunisian PAs in the Green List Process: National Parc El Feija, NP Jbel Serj and NP Dghoumes.  The EAGL ensure that the GL Standard is applicable in their jurisdiction and evaluates PAs against the indicators. Today, the Maghreb EAGL comprise members from Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.  Creation of a Committee for the Green List in Tunisia The GL can be used to guide improved management at site level, and as a framework for PA management at national level. Thus it was agreed that centralised support from public authorities would improve capacities to join the Green List. Measures like the set up of a Committee for the GL in Tunisia with different government bodies to ensure coordinated support and enhance PA management plans were agreed, with 3 PAs in Tunisia receiving support from IUCN MED and WWF NA to develop a GL strategy.  Similar workshops will be co-organized in Morocco and Algeria, and potentially Libya, aiming at leveraging the GL to guide effective protected areas in the region.  Impetus for the Green List in Catalunya The Barcelona Workshop  explored the potential application in Catalonia with representatives from Generalitat de Catalunya, Diputació de Girona, Diputació de Barcelona, Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, Parc Natural Alt Pirineu, PN Capçaleres del Ter I Fresser, PN del Montgri les Illes Medes I el Baix Ter, PN Collserola, PN Sant Llorenç del Munt I l’Obac.  The workshop, co-organised with Generalitat de Catalunya, included a Green List training session on the programme, standard and process, an introduction to IBEX and the start of guided self-assessment with PA managers. The sites will continue their self-assessment with our support and discussion with relevant decision makers.  The Green List in the Mediterranean   A GL site is a protected or conserved area reaching the IUCN Green List Standard and is certified as achieving results for people and nature in an effective way. Any site can join and work its way towards achieving verified success, maintain and improve the Standard.  Through dedicated trainings, IUCN MED is supporting sites and administrations to understand the Green List for effective #management in protected and conserved areas in the Mediterranean.  More info 👉 https://lnkd.in/duqmUzVp

  • 🌍📱 Tech4Nature at the Mobile World Congress 2025 🦅 IUCN and Barcelona Provincial Council took centre stage at the ICT Sustainability Roundtable, organised by Huawei at the Mobile World Congress (#MWC2025), to highlight how digital technology is supporting biodiversity #conservation and sustainability through the Tech4Nature initiative and its Spanish flagship. Created by IUCN and Huawei #TECH4ALL programme, Tech4Nature is a global #partnership that harnesses digital tools to transform conservation practices and outcomes, contributing to the Global Biodiversity Framework Targets. In Spain, the second phase of the project is leveraging technology to monitor and manage the impact of visitors on a pair of Bonelli’s eagles living in Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. Additionally, the project will develop low-cost technological solutions in Sierra Nevada National Park, with the support of the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia. 🤝The event also provided a key opportunity for Tech4Nature #Spain partners to connect and review the latest project developments.
