We are excited to share a recent Euronews article discussing the findings of the #Riscanvi audit, conducted by Eticas AI as part of the DIVERSIFAIR Project. The audit, which was released in July, uncovered substantial deficiencies in the algorithm used in Catalan prisons, raising concerns about bias, fairness, and transparency in AI systems. The DIVERSIFAIR project aims to ensure that technology is applied ethically and without discrimination in crucial sectors, such as criminal justice. The audit’s findings emphasise the need for increased accountability and more rigorous scrutiny of algorithmic decision-making in public institutions. How does #RisCanvi, the #algorithmic system that decides the permits given to inmates in Catalonia, Spain, work? Our report, “Automating (In)justice?: An Adversarial Audit of RisCanvi,” reveals some startling findings that raise serious questions about the system’s reliability: ❌ Lack of awareness and trust among inmates and staff. ⚖️ Opacity and non-compliance with Spanish AI regulations. 📋 Reliability and fairness concerns in risk assessment. But how and when does #RisCanvi intervene in the fate of prisoners? 1. The initial screening applies 10 key risk factors upon an inmate's entry into a penitentiary center, classifying them as "low risk" or "high risk." 2. For individuals designated as "high risk" during the first evaluation, a more detailed examination ensues through a more comprehensive assessment, which includes an analysis of 43 risk factors. ⚖️ Scrutinizing these systems is crucial to ensure justice and transparency.
