Formula Windy gathers all our work related to Wind Tunnel tests (Aeroelasticity & Aerodynamics, Hydraulic Machinery, Wind Engineering, Pollutant Dispersion, Aeroacoustics, and even Water Tunnel tests included) and it is formed exclusively by Professors and Researchers with the Department of Energy and GIFDE (Spanish Official Research Group) of the University of Oviedo. The Department of Energy of the University of Oviedo (GIFDE: Fluid Mechanics Area and Hydraulic Engineering Area) owns 6 wind tunnels for Wind Engineering, Acoustic Engineering and Turbo-machinery Testing, as well as many others small wind tunnels for smoke visualization and teaching about boundary layers. There is also a wind tunnel in Princeton University, NJ, USA. Our Department collaborates with the Department of Construction and Fabrication Engineering of the University of Oviedo (GICONSIME: Construction Engineering Area) which owns 1 Wind Tunnel for Wind Engineering (ceded by Fluid Mechanics Area and firstly re-constructed by JJCD and ANM). SERVICES WE PROVIDE: Wind tunnel testing: 2D, 3D and full aeroelastic models (ABL): forces, pressures, motions&accelerations and PIV in civil engineering and renewable energy structures (bridges&buildings, roofs, towers, windshields, turbines, wind turbines, blades&wings, ventilation, solar trackers&fixed photovoltaic), aeronautics&aerospace, aeroacoustics, pollutant dispersion, granular material piles, sports aerodynamics (cycling, motor-racing, motorcycling), probe cal. Explaining automotive aerodynamics without being an expert like Wouter Remmerie 🏁 was affordable thanks to the smoke visualisation💨 and the intellect of the attendees. Despite being a complex subject, people understood that there is a whole field of study behind their cars and that the Citroen Cx gets its name thanks to its aerodynamic shape 🚘. Here is another of the videos that Fórmula Windy - UO showed at the #FeriaCienciaAsturias2024. I know you've seen the #TacomaNarrows bridge collapse hundreds of times, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know about it. The videos show how the #flutter effect can cause violent and uncontrollable vibrations in bridges, endangering the integrity of the structure. In addition, an interesting experiment was performed using #smoke to visualise the instability and show how the flow interacts with the #bridge. This technique allowed viewers to clearly see what was not visible in the original video, which left many impressed by the magnitude of the problem and the importance of addressing it properly. Here is another video that Fórmula Windy - UO showed at the #FeriaCienciaAsturias2024. Thanks to the smoke wind tunnel people could easily see how position affects the flow💨. We even put Kung Fu Panda in the tunnel to see his aerodynamics (clearly worse than our cyclists, sorry no video 😅🐼). We also showed one of the tests that were carried out in our Ethan50-ablWT wind tunnel to the cyclists of the Caja Rural team, with MMR Bikes. If you are a cycling fan you will surely know some of the people in the video (Chechu Rubiera🚴♀️ and Jonathan Lastra 🚴).
