🌍💻 Last week, The European Observatory on Gender in STI had the privilege of participating in the Multistakeholder Forum on Cybersecurity and Secure Connectivity, hosted by the Digital for Development (D4D) Hub in Madrid. This event brought together a diverse community to strengthen digital cooperation between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, including EU Member States, LAC countries, the private sector, civil society, development financial institutions, and academia. The forum emphasized creating a human-centered, secure, and open digital environment to strengthen #cybersecurity and support #sustainable #digital #infrastructure. One of our representatives Luciana Ayciriex from Grupo Inmark took part in Plenary Session: Human-Centric Approach to Digital Development in the LAC Region, where we presented the European Observatory on Gender in STI Gender STI Project. Through our presentation, we highlighted importance of diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) in the research design process on digital transformation as well as the implementation of #DEI principles and values in the EU-LAC cooperation on #digital #transformation. Gender STI is an international research project that aims to analyze the participation of women in science, technology and innovation (STI) dialogues between Europe and third countries. The project will focus on four key areas: gender equality in scientific careers, gender balance in decision making and the integration of the gender dimension in Research and Innovation (R&I) content. Gender STI will co-design solutions to common challenges found in these areas through a design thinking process. The Gender STI consortium is made up of partners from 16 countries in four continents.

🌍🔬 The European Observatory on Gender in STI was funded under Horizon 2020 Gender STI project, aiming to promote gender equality in research and innovation (R&I), in line with the European Research Area (ERA) strategy. The ERA outline 5 emerging principles to foster gender equality in #STEM: 1️⃣ Equality and Inclusion: Close the gender gap to meet labour market needs, tackle green and digital transitions, and achieve a society based on equal opportunities and social justice. 2️⃣ Holistic Approach: Address gender disparities throughout the education, research, and innovation system. Collaboration among all stakeholders is vital to make STEM inclusive and attractive. 3️⃣ Institutional Change: Overcome stereotypes, biases, and structural barriers in education institutions and R&I organisations to foster a gender-equal, safe, and inclusive culture. 4️⃣ Intersectionality: Recognize the diverse challenges women face due to intersecting social characteristics. Ensure policies are inclusive and intersectional. 5️⃣ Interdisciplinary STEAM Approach: Promote a multidisciplinary set of skills through a collaborative approach to education and research, integrating gender and intersectional perspectives into R&I content. 📊 EU Stat reports that in 2023, 78.3 million people in the EU (aged 15-74) were employed in science and technology – a 2.9% increase from 2022. When compared to 2013, the data shows a substantial 25% rise over the last decade. 🔬📚Science and technology occupations require a high level of professional or technical knowledge in fields like physical and life sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Of the 78.3 million employed, 52% were women, a percentage consistent since 2021. Women worked predominantly in service activities (57% women vs. 43% men), with Malta being an exception at 48%. 🌐The European Commission has released its 2024 report on the post-evaluation of Horizon 2020, the EU framework programme for research and innovation. This comprehensive evaluation examines the programme's impact, efficiency, coherence with other initiatives and relevance to societal needs. While gender equality improved under Horizon 2020, with the share of women in evaluation panels reaching 42% (above the 40% target), there is still work to be done. The share of women in scientific advisory panels and as researchers in projects remains below the 50% target, at 43% and 23%, respectively. 🌍🔬In response, Horizon Europe has been adjusted to integrate the gender dimension across its entire programme. Throughout its duration, the Gender STI project conducted a series of co-design labs, engaging stakeholders in dynamic workshops.
