Looking forward to this webinar in partnership with EU_BUILD UP where we explore how EPCs are evolving to include dynamic, data-driven assessments that consider a building's broader environment and its use over time.
#Renovationwave#EnergyPerformanceCertification
It was an honour to present our paper, a parametric study aimed at informing office building design and evaluating regulatory frameworks in Barcelona, at the final conference of TIMEPAC (see post below).
The conference brought many new perspectives and insights. Personally, my main takeaways from the presentations and discussions are:
1) How do we convert data and information (including certifications, EPCs, renovation passports, digital twins, etc.) into actual sustainable action. It is easy to stare ourselves blind on the data available, and maybe sometimes lose track of what we actually need it for. We need to make sure that the models and frameworks we develop are working towards a more sustainable built environment and improved design, potentially by looking for quality in data instead of quantity, and continuously try to keep that long-term perspective.
2) There was a lot of talk about simplifying complex information so that everyone can understand it. I see the value in that; however, we also need to keep in mind that simplifying information usually leads to a loss of information. Instead of thinking in the direction of complex to simple, perhaps we need to diversify and think from complex into tiers of complexity, aimed at specific audiences, and focus on what information is relevant to which audience.
These and many more thoughts that came up were of course thoroughly discussed over a well-deserved post-conference beer. A big thank you to the team for all the great work!
During the final conference of TIMEPAC, we had the opportunity to present a parametric study investigating how existing and planned building codes and policies in #Spain and the #EU impact new office buildings in #Barcelona, as well as the potential improvements in energy performance with main focus on #PassiveDesign. Key takeaways from the presentation include:
🔑 The current national building code in Spain (CTE HE-2019) should emphasize more restrictive performance-based indicators to maintain relevance and incentivize energy-efficient buildings.
🔑 The most important parameters for compliance with current and planned directives include:
💡 Reducing internal loads through lighting sensors and high efficiency lighting
☀️ Reducing solar gains through effective solar protection and/or optimised WWR
🌬️ Utilising natural ventilation
🔑 A fully optimised configuration of active and passive measures presents a total primary energy use significantly lower than the limits set by CTE HE-2019 (-73%) and the planned EU directive for 2027 (-43%).
It was an excellent conference with inspiring discussions. Special thanks to TIMEPAC coordinator Leandro Madrazo, #ICAEN, #AEB, speakers, moderators and audience.

🏢 Highlights from the #TIMEPACfinalconference 🌍
The TIMEPAC project wrapped up with several insightful sessions on the future of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) recast and the need for data standardization and improved assessment models to drive building renovations across the EU.
Some takeaways from the roundtable discussions and paper presentations at the event include:
- #EPBD, EPCs & #Data Gaps: During his keynote, Pau Garcia Audi policy officer at the Directorate-General for Eneregy at the European Commission highlighted the latest EPBD recast focus areas and medium (#Fitfor55) and long-term targets (decarbonised building stock). He also stressed the importance of making EPCs reliable and standardized across Member States, which can benefit both investors and homeowners. EPC databases are needed to track the energy performance of buildings, but the lack of standardization remains a key hurdle.
- #RenovationPassports: Experts highlighted how renovation passports can provide a more detailed, step-by-step guide for building upgrades. While EPCs are mandatory, renovation passports remain voluntary, and their potential to bridge gaps in building data is still untapped.
- #BIM & EPC #Interoperability: The potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to improve the reliability of EPCs was also discussed. With the integration of BIM data, EPCs could become more accurate and transparent, though challenges remain in harmonizing data across different systems.
- #EnergyPoverty: With up to 12% of the EU population facing energy poverty, improving the quality and accessibility of EPCs is not just about meeting climate targets—it's about ensuring equitable access to energy-efficient living.
The road ahead? Simplifying complex information and data systems, fostering the harmonisation of EPC data within and across countries, integrating interoperable smart technologies, and addressing energy poverty is crucial to making building assessment and renovation across the EU more accessible and sustainable.
TIMEPAC, with its holistic approach to EPCs based on seamless data integration and a myriad of training resources (#TIMEPACAcademy), has been proud to be part of the process and looks to future projects and experts in the space to carry EPCs and building renovation forward to the next generation.

Thanks to all attendees for making this event a success and special thanks to Institut Catala de Energia (ICAEN) for being great hosts!

During the final conference of TIMEPAC I had the opportunity to elaborate about the #buildingrenovationpassport from the perspective of a public authority. It is worth noting that in Italy more than 70% of people are owners of the house where they live and 75% of people live in condominiums. Besides, among the 20% of the poorest people, half of them are property owners. The ability to plan, sequence, and track renovations over time, rather than pushing for a one-time renovation, is particularly advantageous for specific cases when budget constraints can make it really difficult to go for deep renovation.
Besides, I was presenting GASLESS as a lighthouse project for accelerating the energy renovation of public buildings.
👏 A great conference, a great audience and a fantastic moderation.

Today is the day! The TIMEPAC Final Conference on Transforming Building Performance Assessment has just started with an introduction from coordinator Leandro Madrazo. He outlines the project concept of taking a holistic approach to Energy Performance Certification and inserting it into the family of EU funded projects dedicated to support the goals of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
Check out the packed agenda with expert speakers and researchers from all over Europe!

Great to attend the Sustainable Places Conference yesterday!
During the session on "#EPBD Implementation: Facilitated and Enhanced by the #NextGenEPC Cluster Projects," keynotes from European Commission representatives provided valuable insights. Hans Rhein spoke about the LIFE Programme's role in supporting the implementation of Energy Performance Certificates (#EPCs) and the #SmartReadinessIndicator, through projects which aim to bridge the gap between research and policy.
Sylvain Robert shared the latest updates on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) Recast, offering principles and recommendations for the new EPCs. He encouraged all relevant projects to contribute their lessons learned and best practices before the recast is finalized.
iEPB EU project, SmarterEPC, tunES, EPBD.wise, CHRONICLE , SmartLivingEPC and TIMEPAC presented their goals and achievements in this context. A key takeaway was that the EPBD recast and the shift toward a more holistic approach to building assessments will require new tools and a new hub for training on the latest methodologies and guidelines. In the case of the latter, the #TIMEPACAcademy, could serve as a starting point: https://lnkd.in/eKrnpccK
