Malawi 🇲🇼 The National Youth in Mining Initiative in Malawi with technical support from the Natural Resources Justice Network and financial support from the Norwegian Church Aid- Dan Church Aid in Malawi organized a 7 day training on Mineral Governance. The training was participated by 40 youths thus 14 males and 26 females from across Malawi mining hotspot districts. The emphasis of the training was to equip the youths with the basic knowledge and skills in mining governance in order to allow the youths to play a role in decision making processes in the sector. The training also allowed the youths to appreciate some of the international natural resources governance frameworks including the African Mining Vision, United Nations Principles on Business and Human Rights, Extractives Industry Transparency Initiative, Mining Value Chains, Malawi Mines and Minerals Act, the Mines and Minerals Regulations, Environmental Legal and Regulatory Frameworks, Taxation and international Tax Frameworks, the Malawi Fiscal Regime in the Natural Resources sector, ESG Frameworks and principles, and the youths visited a mining site in the District of Balaka. This mission was accomplished by Our Head of Innovation and entrepreneurship kennedy rashid as National Coordinator of NRJN Malawi. #CAYMReps #Sensibilisations #ASM

How is that #UCTLEAD Application going? Still undecided? Well listen to another testimonial from our own highflying Sephela Makete Thema! ‘’Being part of the LEAD 2024 cohort was a life changing moment, and a great highlight of my career. The program gave me the opportunity to spend two weeks with like-minded young African leaders in the mining sector from ten (10) other countries. The program provided us with insights on the current topical issues in the industry such as ASM, ESG, Sustainability, African Mining Vision, African Agenda 2060 and the role that young leaders in shaping the future of African mining. The second week of the program involved various activities at the Investing in Africa Mining Indaba. On the first day, members of the LEAD 2024 cohort were announced as part of the Top 30 future leaders in African mining and shared the stage with HE President Cyril Ramaphosa. The other activities involved meeting and engaging with various Government officials and mining industry captains. A number of LEAD Alumni facilitated and participated in various sessions throughout the Indaba. One of the great takeaways from the program, are the projects that we have embarked on as the Lead Alumni community that seek to positively impact the future of mining on the continent. Post the program, I have been involved in a number of initiatives and projects that promote sustainability in mining, active participation and meaningful inclusion of the most vulnerable of society and host communities in the mining value chain. I also have participated at the Digitisation in Mining Africa conference, the Career in Mining serminar, and was recently recognized as one of the Unsung Heroes and leading youth in Agriculture, Mining, Sustainability and Environment 2024 by the Sunday Sun newspaper” At LEAD we don’t allow our heroes to go unsung! 😉 #nolongerunsung Are you ready now? At the recently concluded Gold and Gemstones Conference (September 24-28) organized by the Women in Mining Nigeria and the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) Supported by the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development. Mecktilder M. M, our Head of Continental Operations and Diaspora Affairs at CAYM, led a highly impactful master class session on Fundamentals of Jewelry Business. This session was a testament to the power of skill-sharing and empowerment. The master classes organized during this conference focused on several key areas delivered by seasoned experts. 1. Fundamentals of Jewelry Making: covering necklaces, rings, bracelets, and introducing essential tools and techniques such as stringing, knotting, and wire wrapping. 2. Design Principles: emphasizing balance, symmetry, and color theory in jewelry design, creating mood boards, and sketching ideas. 3. Metalworking Basics: where participants learned about metals (gold, silver, brass), and techniques such as cutting, shaping, and soldering, alongside important safety practices. 4. Beadwork & Embroidery: detailed techniques for bead weaving and embroidery to create intricate, cultural designs. Mecktilder’s experience aligned with CAYM’s mission of fostering skills and knowledge sharing within the minerals sector. Her dedication to empowering women in mining is a prime example of how Agenda 2063 and the African Mining Vision can be realized. Beyond this, Mecktilder engaged with secondary school and college students along side giants in the Nigerian mining sector , to inspire the next generation and sharing her experiences with the younger generations. This aligns perfectly with CAYM’s goals of creating strong institutions, promoting knowledge-based industries, and building a sustainable future for Africa’s youth. The emphasis on regional cooperation, skill-building, and inclusive growth represents the core values of our organization, reinforcing the need for continuous engagement with young professionals and students.
