🌍 CAYM at the Global Development Initiative in China 🇨🇳 🌍 John Youhanes Magok , our Head of Partnership & Strategic Planning, Finance, and Resources Mobilisation at CAYM, recently attended a seminar for Machinery Industry Management Officials in China under the Global Development Initiative. During this two-week program, John gained valuable insights into the latest advancements in machinery and technology, including fuel cell innovations, carbon capture and utilization, and Lithium-ion battery safety which are critical to the miningindustry. The seminar also covered the critical role of heavy machinery in driving national economic growth and sustainable industrialization, supported by cutting-edge research and precision tools. With practical exercises in sectors like automotive and agricultural machinery, the seminar provided John with fresh perspectives on how Africa can transform its commodity-based industries by adopting similar technologies and strategies. 🌍 Highlights from the Pan African Youth Forum 2024 🌍 The President of the Council of African Youth in Minerals (CAYM), Arby Kane, actively participated in key discussions during the forum, representing our commitment to driving positive change in Africa’s minerals sector. Day 1: Educating Changemakers - Unlocking Youth Potential for Civic Leadership Arby Kane joined a powerful panel on "Educating Changemakers," where discussions centered around youth empowerment through education. He shared CAYM's efforts to raise awareness about artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and child labor, and how mining education can create opportunities for sustainable development across different sectors. Day 2: Employment Opportunities in the Mining Sector On the second day, CAYM’s strategy was showcased—focused on implementing Agenda 2063 and the African Mining Vision (AMV). Through our continental platform, we are connecting young professionals with job opportunities in the mining industry, demonstrating how various sectors can collaborate to support community development. Malawi 🇲🇼 The National Youth in Mining Initiative in Malawi with technical support from the Natural Resources Justice Network and financial support from the Norwegian Church Aid- Dan Church Aid in Malawi organized a 7 day training on Mineral Governance. The training was participated by 40 youths thus 14 males and 26 females from across Malawi mining hotspot districts. The emphasis of the training was to equip the youths with the basic knowledge and skills in mining governance in order to allow the youths to play a role in decision making processes in the sector. The training also allowed the youths to appreciate some of the international natural resources governance frameworks including the African Mining Vision, United Nations Principles on Business and Human Rights, Extractives Industry Transparency Initiative, Mining Value Chains, Malawi Mines and Minerals Act, the Mines and Minerals Regulations, Environmental Legal and Regulatory Frameworks, Taxation and international Tax Frameworks, the Malawi Fiscal Regime in the Natural Resources sector, ESG Frameworks and principles, and the youths visited a mining site in the District of Balaka. This mission was accomplished by Our Head of Innovation and entrepreneurship kennedy rashid as National Coordinator of NRJN Malawi. #CAYMReps #Sensibilisations #ASM

Well listen to another testimonial from our own highflying Sephela Makete Thema! ‘’Being part of the LEAD 2024 cohort was a life changing moment, and a great highlight of my career. The program gave me the opportunity to spend two weeks with like-minded young African leaders in the mining sector from ten (10) other countries. The program provided us with insights on the current topical issues in the industry such as ASM, ESG, Sustainability, African Mining Vision, African Agenda 2060 and the role that young leaders in shaping the future of African mining. The second week of the program involved various activities at the Investing in Africa Mining Indaba. On the first day, members of the LEAD 2024 cohort were announced as part of the Top 30 future leaders in African mining and shared the stage with HE President Cyril Ramaphosa. The other activities involved meeting and engaging with various Government officials and mining industry captains. A number of LEAD Alumni facilitated and participated in various sessions throughout the Indaba. One of the great takeaways from the program, are the projects that we have embarked on as the Lead Alumni community that seek to positively impact the future of mining on the continent. Post the program, I have been involved in a number of initiatives and projects that promote sustainability in mining, active participation and meaningful inclusion of the most vulnerable of society and host communities in the mining value chain. I also have participated at the Digitisation in Mining Africa conference, the Career in Mining serminar, and was recently recognized as one of the Unsung Heroes and leading youth in Agriculture, Mining, Sustainability and Environment 2024 by the Sunday Sun newspaper” At LEAD we don’t allow our heroes to go unsung! 😉 #nolongerunsung Are you ready now?
