Open Seminar on the impact of mobility for people and food in the Arctic, oraganized 5-6 September 2024, Rovaniemi. Human movement between the Arctic and East Asia due to tourism and business is increasing. Food, especially fishery resources, from the Arctic meet the growing market demand in East Asia. On the other hand, such influences from Asia have a major impact on local communities in the Arctic. In the seminar the lived experience of this interdependence is discussed and it provides an opportunity to think about what kind of regional exchange is desirable for people on both sides. Seminar is organized by the Anthropology Team at the Arctic Centre together with Japanese colleagues, coordinated by the Centre for Northeast Asian Studies in Tohoku University. Read more:

Uuden hollantilaistutkimmuksen mukaan Pohjois-Euroopan elinkelpoisuuden kannalta elintärkeä merivirta on hyvin suurella todennäköisyydellä tyrehtymässä vielä tällä vuosisadalla. Tämä voisi muuttaa esimerkiksi Lapin ilmaston samanlaiseksi kuin Alaskan tai Itä-Siperian nykyinen ilmasto. Though being an Arctic Centre, many of our researchers also focus their research on the other polar region. The global Antarctic research event, 11th Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Open Science Conference, was organized 19-23 August 2024 in Pucón, Chile. Junior Researcher Katharina Heinrich and Visiting Researcher Marco Volpe took part the conference and presented their work in the Panel led by Prof. Akiho Shibata, Director of the Kobe PCRC, in the Panel about the "Consensus building based on best available science under ATS". Both Katharina and Marco got funded through the Kobe PCRC fellowship under JSPS KAKENHI "The Resilience of the Antarctic Treaty System under the Anthropocene".

Valtionraja ei ole yksiselitteinen asia. Se erottaa toisistaan eri valtiot, mutta samalla rajaa ylläpidetään ja sen toimintaa säädellään kaupan, energian ja muiden rajoja ylittävien asioiden suhteen. Suomen ja Ruotsin välinen raja syntyi Haminan rauhassa 1809. Aiheesta Lapin yliopistossa hiljattain väitellyt Sami Pekola avaa Kalle Haatasen podcastissa Ylellä tämän "rajattoman rajan" monenlaisia muotoja ja käytännöllisiä asioita, joista piirtyy esiin Suomen historiaa autonomian ajasta nykypäiviin. Five scholars, including senior researchers and PhD candidates from the Arctic Centre, attended an interesting PhD summer school focusing on 𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜. Summer school was held at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute in Oslo, Norway, from 12 to 16 August 2024. The School was organized as part of a NordForsk-funded project. In the project, the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland partners with the UiT- The Arctic University of Norway and Lund University in Sweden.
