Master of History candidate at Stellenbosch University | Assistant Lecturer | History Tutor & Teacher | Freelance content creator & photographer
My field of interest includes animal-sensitive histories, with a particular focus on the feathered folk. Through my work, I consider the complex historical relationship shared between humans and animals. Currently, I am working on my Master’s dissertation, which explores the history of the blue crane species in South Africa. Through my research, I am considering cosmologies, rituals and symbolic underpinnings of blue cranes and how the history of the blue crane is deeply entangled with the history of South Africans.

Heritage in War and Peace IV: Spotlight on Panel 3 With the Call for Papers for the next edition of the conference closing in the next couple of weeks, together with Strathclyde Law School and HII - Heritage International Institute we are going to take a closer look at its different panels. Today we are looking at Panel 3, “Digital Heritage and Digitalization of Heritage”, which proved particularly popular during the previous edition of the conference. Given the current advances in technology, including AI, the digitalization of heritage takes on a twofold role, both providing a possibility of providing access to heritage all over the world and giving a chance to save vulnerable heritage from destruction, at least in the digital form. At the same time, it raises a number of ethical issues, in particular relating to the digitalization of the intangible heritage. The panel is going to be co-chaired by Davide S., Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Cairo, Adam Harkens, Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, & Giulia Parenti, tutor at Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna. cc: Guido Noto La Diega, Julija Kalpokiene, Ignas Kalpokas https://lnkd.in/euKgzNGe

⚖ [Ice Memory Law & Governance Workshop] Ownership of scientific heritage: reasonable doubts or false certainties? We are proud to support the Ice Memory Law & Governance Research chair coordinated by the CRJ - UGA and to inform you about the launch of its workshops series. 🔎 Are you a researcher? 👉 For glaciologists, researchers conducting research abroad, science, environmental and international law researchers only. 🌐 We invite you to join us on February 8, 2024 at 5pm-6:30pm CET for the first workshop of our Law & Governance Research series. 🗻 Constituting the Ice Memory Heritage involves a number of original legal questions such as their long-term preservation in an Antarctic sanctuary, the protection of data resulting from scientific research on these ice cores and, more broadly, the international governance of this heritage. The Ice Memory Law and Governance Chair has been created precisely to meet these legal challenges. ❓ What is scientific heritage? How is the ownership of a scientific heritage established? How are collected scientific samples acquired? Is there a difference in the status of scientific samples depending on who owns them? Do the Ice Memory ice cores belong to their collectors, as part of their scientific assets? 🏛 With Marta C. Lourenço, Director of the National Museum of Natural History and Science of Lisbon, Researcher at the Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology, National Coordinator of the Portuguese Research Infrastructure for Scientific Collections (PRISC). 🔔 Register today to book your spot: https://bit.ly/3O5C4KB Fondation Université Grenoble Alpes, Centre national de la recherche scientifique, IRD, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Paul Scherrer Institut PSI, Université Grenoble Alpes, Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia, Institut polaire français Paul-Émile Victor A special thank you to the major donor Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco! #icememory #research #glaciology #icecore #sanctuary #futuregenerations #international #policymaking #advocacy #law #heritage

In our current world, environmental scientists have been put a pedestal, as if they are never capable of exaggeration, ideological capture or unethical behaviour. This, despite, their open activism for causes. But they can be unethical, they can falsify data, and show total disregard for the truth. Here’s what the judge had to say about Dr Michael O’Leary - a ‘climate geoscientist’ at the University of Western Australia - who presented evidence against the building of a gas pipeline at the federal court. ‘My concern about Dr O’Leary’s independence and credibility are such that I would not accept his evidence as sufficient to establish any scientific proposition at all, even if his proposition had gone unchallenged and even if he possessed the appropriate skills, qualifications and experience to express them. My conclusions about Dr O’Leary’s regard for the truth, lack of independence and lack of scientific rigour are sufficient to discount or dismiss all of his reports for all purposes.’ Behind paywall but worth reading: Climate ‘geoscientist’ blasted over ‘cultural mapping’ bid https://lnkd.in/gXcrmgwQ
An interesting case where allegedly "scientific" expertise from a university academic has received stinging criticism from #federalcourt Justice Natalie Charlesworth, namely that their actions represented: "... conduct far flung from proper scientific method and falls short of an expert's obligation to this Court." Here's the coverage from National Indigenous Times. https://lnkd.in/gAfyExBQ

Inspired by the growing interest of my international friends I'm sharing my brief research, which examines the integral role of Georgian culture within European civilization and its significant contributions to the shaping of European culture. The study follows chronological structure and logical reasoning, substantiated by historical evidence, expert analyses, and authoritative sources. While this research does not cover every aspect of this long and rich history, I hope my fellow colleagues and international friends will find it informative and enjoyable. 🤗

📣 Excited to share that my first PhD paper, co-authored with Ben Derudder, has been published in Global Policy. In this paper, we analyze to what extent cooperation in transnational city networks faces the same institutional challenges as those related to interstate collaboration. I am also eager to announce that this summer I am given the opportunity, thanks to the Menard Center for Constitutional Studies at UW-Eau Claire and Philip Rechek, to research a comparative constitutional analysis on states in the international system. This research will be partnered with Julia Thompson, another stellar Political Science student at UWEC, to examine the Roma Genocide around the time of the Second World War. I cannot wait to let the research commence! #Undergradresearch #MenardCenter #UWEC #Politicalscience
