Citisystem project meeting is underway in Slovenia, focusing on the circular bioeconomy. At the meeting, project partners from Finland, Slovakia, Belgium, Greece, Slovenia, and Spain are sharing best practices, discussing ways to promote the circular bioeconomy in their regions, and learning from one another.
In Lahti, an overview of the movement of bio-flows in the city has been developed. In my presentation, I showed an illustration depicting the flows of bio-based materials within the city.
Four takeaways from the meeting:
1. Ribno hotel in Slovenia is committed to sustainable development and has zerowaste certificate. Hotel owners have developed many good practices to promote sustainable tourism. For example, there are no trash bins in the hotel rooms; instead, there are recycling stations in the hallway.
2. Radovljica town is an inspiring example of how collaboration and passion can be used to develop successful business. Local entrepreneurs, such as farmers, restaurant owners, artisans, and hotel owners, have collaboratively created a sustainable tourism destination where a shared vision has transformed the town into a successful green tourism hub. Cooperation is the key!
3. Second-hand can offer many opportunities, including employment for vulnerable groups. We visited a store that sells products made from recycled materials, for example, backpacks made from old jeans. The store was accompanied by a workshop where the products are made.
4. At the meeting, Kimmo Rinne from Salpakierto gave a presentation on the operations of Salpakierto. In Lahti, we can be proud of our excellent waste management system and the great work Salpakierto is doing, but there is still room for improvement. Biowaste continues to end up in mixed waste, and we should focus on enhancing biowaste sorting. Good cooperation to solve this challenge continues!
