CITYAM – Preparing cities for sustainable Urban Air Mobility
Technology, Information and Internet
CITYAM aims to support and empower cities in facilitating a responsible and acceptable increase in urban air mobility.
About us
The CITYAM project aims to support and empower cities in facilitating a responsible and acceptable increase in urban air mobility via transnational Baltic Sea Region cooperation. It helps cities and citizens to adapt to the changes and to see the possibilities. CITYAM seeks solutions suitable for increasing urban air mobility in a responsible way. Drones are a green and smart mobility form, but the potential, volume and sustainability of these automated vehicles in the lower airspace of our cities needs management and better planning. For this, a strategy and policies, preparation, greater awareness and more knowledge and tools are crucial. Through close transnational cooperation, CITYAM will provide the ingredients and tools for a solid urban air mobility strategy, to adapt city planning practices in relation to landing site and airspace management, and also to scale city-relevant drone operations as part of a multimodal transport system. Increasing public officials’ capabilities, and measuring public acceptance are key to this work. During the project, the solutions will be tested in the three leading cities of Hamburg, Helsinki and Stockholm for different purposes. The project is funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region. Partners: Forum Virium Helsinki (coordinator), National Land Survey of Finland, Aalto University, Hamburg Aviation Cluster, Stockholm City, Kista Science City, Hamburg Port Authority, Riga Technical University, City of Riga, City of Tartu, Tallinn University of Technology, Estonian Aviation Academy, and City of Gdansk. Associated partners: Fintraffic Air Navigation Services, City of Helsinki’s Economic Department and Land Use Planning Department, City of Hamburg’s Ministry of Economy and Innovation,Gesellschaft fur Luftverkesinformatik, LFV (Swedish Civil Aviation Administration), Latvia Association of Large Cities, Estonian Aviation Cluster, Technical University of Gdansk, and Polish Civil Aviation Authority.

Currently, we are conducting a survey in Helsinki to find out how citizens feel about drones in emergency situations. If you are a Helsinki resident, please participate!
Helsinki is conducting a survey to measure public opinion on drones. The answers will help the city to develop urban airspace regulations that take residents’ views into account. Participate in the drone survey by 30 October 2024! The survey is part of the urban air mobility centred CITYAM – Preparing cities for sustainable Urban Air Mobility project.

For Innovative Air Mobility (aerial drones in the urban airspace), the topics of governance, funding, integration into legacy policies and European cooperation remain on the priority list. That's why this meeting with cities was necessary, timely and useful. We continue our work - both in the UIC2 network as well as in Helsingin kaupunki – Helsingfors stad – City of Helsinki and there is absolutely place for more active cities. Join us! Forum Virium Helsinki Christina Suomi Zacharoula Syrivli CITYAM – Preparing cities for sustainable Urban Air Mobility
🌍✈️ On September 30th and October 1st, the UIC2 workshop took place at the CIVITAS Forum in Parma, where significant progress was made in advancing UIC2 governance and discussing about best European practices on #UrbanAirMobility (UAM), as well as planning future activities! 🔑 Key milestone: One of the highlights was the official handover of the funding request letter to Isabelle Vandoorne from the European Commission. The letter underscores our request for financial support to accelerate UAM integration across European cities, with a special focus on TEN-T regulation and enhancing urban infrastructure. 💬 Discussion on UIC2 governance: Another key topic was the evolution of the UIC2 governance model, with UIC2 members leading discussions on how to define the new governance structure, along with a preliminary list of responsibilities for each role of the community. 🇮🇹 Italian experiences: The Italian perspective took centre stage as Davide Drago from ENAC - Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile and Calogero Giammusso from UrbanV shared valuable insights on how Italy is integrating UAM into urban mobility planning via Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (#SUMPs). 🔎 Best practices: A significant discussion among members focused on best practices at the European level for integrating UAM into urban mobility. The discussion was further enriched by the intervention of Thiago Tavares from CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, who brought valuable expertise on EU-funded projects, helping the community understand how to harness European funding to drive UAM innovation. 📅 Next steps: UIC2 has already set the date for the next physical workshop, which will focus on eVTOLs and Drones Regulation, to be held in Brussels on December 4th. A big thank you to all participants for the energy and contributions during these two days of innovation! 🚀 We would also like to thank the CIVITAS Initiative organisers, including REGGIE TRICKER , for hosting the workshop and enabling the UIC2 community to take another important step forward on its journey. Stockholm is expanding its innovative use of drones to tackle a persistent problem: geese. The spillage from the geese risks contaminating the water, which means that several bathing areas in Stockholm have been temporarily closed. This summer, the city tested if Canada geese and white-cheeked could be effectively herd with speakers, a camera, and drones. The system identifies which type of goose is in question and plays the species’ warning call. If that isn’t enough, a drone is used to herd the geese away from the bathing area.
