A new pan-European supercomputer and a European Union AI Factory to be placed in Finland 🇫🇮   🇫🇮 The new supercomputer will be operated by CSC and placed in CSC’s data center in Kajaani, Finland. 🤝 The system and AI Factory will be hosted by a consortium of six countries: Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland. 🌍 The upcoming supercomputer will eventually replace the current LUMI supercomputer. “This is a very significant investment. It ensures that Finland will remain at the forefront of supercomputing development well into the future. In addition, it will contribute to the digitalization of society as a whole, boost the data economy, and develop new technologies such as AI and quantum technologies”, says Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC.   “We are excited to be given this task. The LUMI AI Factory will enable a whole new range of services to support research and industrial use of AI. 🤝 Our CEO Kimmo Koski participated in a visit to key Canadian RDI-enabling organizations on 29-30 of January together with Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriö/Undervisnings- och kulturministeriet/Ministry of Education & Culture and Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia. The purpose of this visit to was to strengthen scientific collaboration between Finland and Canada. We are excited to announce Europe's largest open source AI initiative, bringing together 20 leading research institutions, companies, and EuroHPC centers! 🚀 ✨ OpenEuroLLM ✨ is a collaborative effort to develop a family of open-source and multilingual large language models (LLMs) designed to empower businesses, industries, and public services. Uniting 20 leading research institutions, companies, and EuroHPC centres, OpenEuroLLM prioritises transparency, compliance, and performance to ensure access to cutting-edge AI technology as a powerful tool accessible to all.  "Open language models for European languages that reflect our values enable free development of a wide range of downstream AI applications by researchers, industry, and the public sector. At CSC, we are excited to contribute to the creation of these models using the resources of LUMI supercomputer and the LUMI AI Factory" says Markus Koskela, CSC´s Senior Application Specialist. 🌍 Aligned with Europe’s digital sovereignty goals, the project builds upon Europe’s robust regulatory framework and upon strong community involvement. The resulting models will be fully open and fine-tunable for specific needs, while preserving linguistic and cultural diversity. Backed by the European Commission’s Digital Europe Programme and awarded the STEP seal, OpenEuroLLM sets a new standard for transparent AI. CSC Summer School in High-Performance Computing, 24.6.–3.7.2025 The CSC Summer School in High-Performance Computing is taking place from June 24 to July 3, 2025 in Nuuksio, Espoo! 🌲🏖️ The CSC Summer School brings together students and researchers in different disciplines of scientific computing from all over the world. 🌟 10 years of connecting Finnish 🇫🇮 life sciences to Europe 💡 Life science research, like understanding rare diseases or tackling climate change, relies on massive datasets, advanced tools, and collaboration. That’s why ELIXIR Finland was created: to provide researchers in Finland with key resources like databases, software, and connect them to European supercomputers and networks. Over the past 10 years, ELIXIR Finland, hosted by CSC, has boosted Finnish life sciences in many ways, e.g.:  🌐 Participated in 50+ EU projects to boost collaboration  👥 Supported researchers with expertise from 160+ CSC specialists  💶 Secured €13.7M in international funding since 2019 “Today, CSC and ELIXIR Finland support over 1,600 health and life sciences research projects, and that number is expected to double in 5 years. CSC is actively involved in projects that develop digital twins, virtual models of a physical object, system, or process. Data produced by digital twins can be used extensively in society, for example in decision-making from the EU level to the local level and from municipal decision-makers to ordinary residents. Destination Earth (DestinE) is the European Commission flagship project to develop the Earth’s digital twin, a precise digital model of Earth system. The information produced by the model will enable us to better adapt to and respond to climate change and extreme weather events. The project has two high-priority digital twins: 🌍Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin 🌎Extreme Weather Digital Twin.
