Global insights: EnergyVaasa in the USA 🌎 For the past few days, we have been exploring Raleigh in North Carolina and heard state and academic perspectives on the investments and initiatives to develop clean energy and renewables in North Carolina. 🌞 At the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality we met Andrea Pulliam Braswell (in the first picture), who is the Interim Program Manager for NC Solar for All at the North Carolina EnergizeNC Coalition. This program aims to grow solar energy in the state. 👨🎓We also met with Dr. Greg Gangi (in the second picture), who is the Associate Director for Clean Technology and Innovation within the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Insitute for the Environment. Global Insights: EnergyVaasa in the USA 🌎 We say goodbye to Washington D.C. and head for the next state on the program ✈️ Next up is North Carolina, a state that has responded to growing concerns over energy security and environmental sustainability by implementing a range of initiatives aimed at transforming local landscapes through clean energy technologies. 🍀 Raleigh, the state capital, has been positioned as a model city for sustainable urban development and economic growth driven by innovation in clean energy. These sustainability achievements have been possible thanks to collective efforts from state government, educational institutions, and both for and non-profit sectors. 🌱 The next five days will highlight state level investment in renewables, academic partnerships advancing clean technology and innovation as well as regional solar power infrastructure. ☀️ For example, we will learn more about the North Carolina Solar for All (SFA) Coalition, which is a program that works to deploy solar in all regions of state. Global Insights: EnergyVaasa in the USA 🌎 On the post-election day we head for the U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Energy Resources. Here, Mr. Adrian Howe (in the first picture), who is a Senior Energy Officer in the Office of energy transformation, gave us a comprehensive overview of the electrical grid and energy system in the United States. 🏛️In the afternoon we continued our deep dive into the state of renewables in the U.S. We visited the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) at the United States Department of Energy. Here, Sara McKinley, the Manager of State Outreach for FERC gave a presentation on the national standards related to the energy grid and the development of renewables. Global Insights: EnergyVaasa in the USA 🌎 After a couple of days of introductions and practicalities, the third day of the exchange started with a deep dive into the U.S. power grid and energy system focusing especially on renewables and the development of clean energy the upcoming decade. 🌐Mr. Cy McGeady (first picture from left) working for the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) gave a thorough presentation of the energy grid highlighting both the opportunities and challenges in the US electrical grid. 📑In the afternoon, Dr. Clarence Lusane Ph.D. (second picture from left) from the Howard University presented an overview of the U.S. system of government, the constitution and its amendments. EnergyVaasa in the USA 🌎 We finally had time to take the obligatory group picture! 📷 This is the group of industry colleagues from different corners of the globe, whom I will be travelling with the coming weeks. Together we represent over twenty countries: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Azerbadjan, Bosnia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Finland, Hong Kong S.A.R., Hungary, Italy, Kyrgyz Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, Nigeria, Philippines, Slovak Republic, Slovenia. 📚Yesterday all of us head for the Meridian Offices for a briefing about the program and the coming visits to different states and institutions. EnergyVaasa goes to the USA 🌎 It is time to kick off our sustainable energy journey through the States! Today EnergyVaasa’s Communications & Brand Manager Kristoffer Jansson – and over twenty other industry professionals around the world – travel to Washington DC to take part in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) “Renewable Energy as an Economic Driver II”. 🌱 The program runs from 2 to 23 November 2024 and it examines how sustainable energy development fosters global political stability and prosperity. 🚀 We will get insights to the U.S. policies at the federal, state and local levels that drive innovation in clean energy. We will explore innovations in renewable energy and in the grid from economic, environmental, and security perspectives. And we will examine the role of universities and think tanks in the development of new technologies. To name a few. 🤝 IVLP is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. How can we work together to develop the next generation district heating network in Lintuvuori in Mustasaari? How do we take advantage of excess heat and how can local companies benefit from this? And what new actors can be involved? These were some of the themes discussed in yesterday’s workshop organized jointly by VASEK and Merinova as a part of the “New energy economy in the Vaasa region” project. The mission for the afternoon was to kick-off the planning of a pilot project using new technology to create a 4th or 5th generation district heating network in Lintuvuori. To get the ideas flowing, insights to heat generation, storage and distribution were provided by Denise Conway from Heliostorage, Juha Virkki from HögforsGST and Antti Ala-Talkkari from Veljekset Ala-Talkkari Oy . Furthermore, Nikolas Salomaa from nolla_E , was invited to introduce their method of planning carbon neutral buildings and housing areas and finding the right combination of methods for maximized energy efficiency. The following panel invited local actors to the stage: Mikko Pieska from Vaasan ammattikorkeakoulu VAMK University of Applied Sciences , Hannu Kotimäki from Polttoväri Oy , Tomas Nyqvist from Korsholms kommun - Mustasaaren kunta - Korsholm Municipality and Simon Björkman from Epv Energia Oy . Together with the audience, the panelists mapped the current situation, the needs and possible next steps. “Great job from all today, speakers, panelists, the audience. It became very clear that our region has a unique possibility to make showcase of the fourth or even 5th generations district heating network,” Lasse Pohjala, Senior Business Advisor at Vaasa Region Development Company VASEK , summarizes the afternoon. Tauno Kekäle, Project Manager at Technology Centre Merinova Oy , adds that the workshop was a great starting point for further discussions with the municipality of mustasaari with the aim to drive the development further and involve the relevant actors to make the change. The New energy economy in the Vaasa region is co-founded by the European union. #EnergyVaasa
