Connecting knowledge to action
About us
The European Forest Institute (EFI) is a pan-European international organization. We have 30 Member Countries, and c.130 member organizations from 41 different countries working in diverse research fields. We conduct research and provide policy support on forest-related issues. Our dual membership, together with our staff of over 100 experts, is our most important asset. It places EFI in a unique position to generate, connect and share knowledge at the interface between science and policy. Find out more about our work: www.efi.int

🌲 During panel three at the 9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference, signatories and observers endorsed the Bonn Ministerial Decision and the creation of the Forest Risk Facility (FoRISK). 🔑 A key takeaway was the need to rethink and adapt strategies and approaches to maintain and enhance the resilience of #forests, landscapes, and society to the ever-increasing risks that #climatechange, the #biodiversity crisis, but also, e.g., land degradation and desertification pose for European forests. 🌍 Strengthening synergies across borders and sectors and committing to transboundary Sustainable Forest Management will enhance forest #resilience and secure the future of our forests. #9MC #FutureForests

🌍 Last week, on Wednesday 16 October, we launched the latest From Science to Policy report on “Carbon Farming in the European Forestry Sector” at the ThinkForest event at the Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU in Brussels, organised and funded by the European Forest Institute (EFI). As a contributor to the economics and policy section, I’d like to highlight four key points we stressed: 1. Prevent market leakage – Emissions reductions in one region can cause increases elsewhere, so broader macroeconomic impacts on prices and demand must be factored into carbon market regulations. 2. Carbon credits must be temporal – Forest carbon sequestration is time-limited, and temporal credits reflect this, ensuring realistic expectations of climate benefits. 3. Ensure additionality – A combined use of on-site checks, remote sensing, and modelling techniques must verify that carbon sequestration is truly additional, balancing accuracy, transparency, and cost-effectiveness. 4. No offsetting – Instead of compensating for emissions, temporal credits should contribute to climate action, aligning with broader climate strategies and supporting EU member state GHG reporting efforts. These points are essential to ensure that carbon credits provide real value and lead to genuine emissions reductions. Today, I had the pleasure of meeting with Robert Mavsar, Director at the European Forest Institute, here at the CIFOR-ICRAF campus in Nairobi. Accompanied by our CIFOR-ICRAF team—Peter A Minang, Alice Muchugi, and Isaac Rutenberg—we explored pathways for collaboration that align with our shared vision for sustainable forest management and policy support. Both CIFOR-ICRAF and EFI are committed to leveraging research to inform and advocate for sound forest policies that benefit trees, people, and the planet. As we move forward, we look forward to working together to enhance support for decision-makers and promote sustainable practices that safeguard the world’s forests. #Trees4Resilience
