Enabling the Blue Food Revolution – We transform low-value fish industry raw materials into high-value food products.
About us
Enabling the Blue Food Revolution – Mainstreaming sidestreams by transforming underutilised, low-value fish industry raw materials into high-value food products. Hailia is a food technology company developing novel seafood production methods that promote resource efficiency. Whether it’s salmonid sidestreams, small pelagics, or other underutilised seafood raw materials, we transform them into tasty, easy-to-use mainstream food products with exceptional taste, texture, and mouthfeel. We turn waste into profit: the raw materials wasted in low-value use can be upcycled to have a ten-fold value when utilised as high-quality seafood products such as chunks, patties, and strips. We function as a licensing tech provider and contract manufacturer, producing novel seafood products at our state-of-the-art facility in Karkkila, Finland. We strive to use our technology to assist industry members in increasing their resource efficiency and profitability. This brings us all closer to meeting the ever-growing demand for healthy, affordable, and sustainable seafood. Aiming to be the future industry standard in handling sidestreams and underutilised pelagics, we are on our way to open seas and vast waters. Welcome aboard!

⭐ 2024: What a FINTASTIC year! ⭐ As we swim toward the end of 2024, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what a fintastic year it’s been for Hailia. It’s been a journey full of waves - some smooth, some challenging - but all of them have pushed us forward. 🎉 What we’re celebrating: This year, we achieved some incredible milestones. First, in September we successfully launched our Pulled Rainbow Trout product in collaboration with our partner Kalavapriikki Oy. From project kick-off to market launch in less than a year, the product is now available nationwide in all S-ryhmä / S Group stores - a huge accomplishment for everyone involved! Next, we introduced Pulled Salmon to the market in collaboration with our partner Hätälä Oy, targeting food service, HoReCa, and food industry customers. This partnership marked another big step forward. ✨ And, of course, sealing our very first licensing deal was a truly defining moment - what an achievement! None of this would have been possible without our amazing team. A heartfelt thank-you to each and every one of you. 💙 As cherry on top: 🏆 Award-Winning Innovations: We won FoodBev Media’s World Food Innovation Award for Best Technology Innovation. On top of that, we took home the Best Business Award in the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)’s global food technology competition, which recognized our potential to address some of the biggest challenges in the global food system. 🎤 Sharing Our Mission on Global Stages: In July, we spoke at the Sustainable Foods Summit in Amsterdam, sharing Hailia’s mission to revolutionize seafood and make a meaningful impact. In September, we headed to Reykjavik for the 5th Fish Waste for Profit Conference, where we presented on how Hailia is transforming seafood sidestreams into delicious, sustainable food products using innovative upcycling technology. 📰 Making Waves in the Media: We also got fantastic visibility! Our opinion piece in Fiskeribladet highlighted how seafood byproducts can transform challenges into profits for an industry under pressure. Link in comments. And yes, we made it to Forbes! Forbes! 🎉 Link to article in comments. 🔎 🗺️ Looking ahead: We know exactly where we’re headed - full speed ahead! Our mission is clear: getting our technology and products into the hands of as many people as possible. 🚀 2025 is already shaping up to be an exciting year. We’ve got new partnerships and licensing deals cooking. But that’s not all - there are some exciting new products in the pipeline, and we can’t wait to roll them out to our customers. A big thank-you to all our customers, partners, stakeholders and team members - you’ve helped us navigate the tides and keep swimming forward. Here’s to another year of making waves together! 🎉 Big news! Hailia has landed its first technology licensing deal! 🐟 Wow! We’re really proud to share a major milestone in our mission to transform the seafood industry! Kalavapriikki Oy is leading the way in sustainable fish processing, proving themselves as pioneers in the field. After a year of collaboration—and just three months since we launched our first product together—they’re taking the leap to integrate our fish sidestream technology into their Kuopio facility. This means they’ll have the same cutting-edge system we use in our own factory, marking the first time Hailia’s innovation goes beyond our walls. It’s an exciting step forward and a testament to just how forward-thinking Kalavapriikki is as a company! 🐟🌍 💬 Kalavapriikki’s CEO, Jari Korhonen says: “Our goal has always been to create sustainable food from Finnish fish. With Hailia’s technology, we’re raising the bar, doubling production, and setting a new standard for responsible seafood production.” We couldn’t agree more. This isn’t just about tech—it’s about proving that sustainability and profitability can be best friends. And hey, we’re just getting started. If you’re a forward-thinking fish processor ready to up your game, give us a shout. Let’s put those fins and frames to work. 🛠️🐟 Press release in comments. #sustainability #bluefoodrevolution #circulareconomy

It’s been quite the few weeks for Hailia, with two announced partnerships with Kalavapriikki Oy and Hätälä Oy, a feature in Forbes, and attending seafood industry events in Reykjavik and Madrid. Our CEO Michaela reflects on the recent whirlwind in her latest post, which includes some true gems 💎: "What really stood out to me is how vital partnerships are. Achieving circularity isn’t something we can do in silos—collaboration between researchers, industry leaders, start-ups, decision-makers, and others is key to making meaningful progress. 🤝 " This indeed is a major part of Hailia’s story. No company can introduce and reinforce novel practices within the industry by pushing alone. Instead, strong collaborations with shared ambitions – and mutual benefits – are essential. And when these collaborations succeed, the impact will be immense. What can we achieve together?
These past few weeks have been full of energy-boosting discussions and new insights. 💡 I started by attending the 100%Fish event in Reykjavik, alongside a visit to the Iceland Ocean Cluster, and then this week, I had the opportunity to attend the EuroFish conference in Madrid, where the focus was on circular models within the fish industry. What really stood out to me is how vital partnerships are. Achieving circularity isn’t something we can do in silos—collaboration between researchers, industry leaders, start-ups, decision-makers, and others is key to making meaningful progress. 🤝 I’m also more convinced than ever that we need to learn from outside own industry. The best ideas often come from unexpected places, and looking beyond the usual scope can open up entirely new ways to solve challenges. Finally, these experiences reminded me of the power of in-person connections. Meeting people face-to-face, sharing ideas, and building relationships during these events is invaluable—those real-life interactions are where true collaboration starts. Excited to keep the momentum going and see where these conversations lead! 🌍 Hailia Nordic Oy #bluefoodrevolution #seafoodtech #seafood #innovation Otto Kaukonen

Forbes! We’re on Forbes! 🤩 Our circular concept of turning fish processing sidestreams into high-value food products is gaining serious traction, not just within the international seafood industry but also in the media! The article highlights our circular concept as a potential solution to meet the growing demand for seafood without placing additional pressure on the environment. The newly signed partnership with Hätälä Oy is a great example of how this is being put into practice generating all that impact already – and increasing fish processors’ profitability too. Our CEO Michaela also sheds light on how our tech solution can be integrated into existing seafood production facilities, providing an easy, turnkey solution for fish processors: “Fish processors are finally given the tools to upcycle sidestreams into food in their own factories. This expands their core business and product portfolio with more affordable and convenient food product concepts. #BlueFoodRevolution #BlueEconomy #SeafoodIndustry #FishIndustry #FoodTech
