Long COVID Project
Hospitals and Health Care
HE Project aiming to understand the mechanisms behind the long-term effects of a COVID-19 infection.
About us
Long COVID is a 48-month Horizon Europe project aiming to understand the mechanisms of host-virus response behind the long-term symptoms following COVID-19 infection. The number of patients suffering from long-term effects of a COVID-19 infection are growing worldwide. Based on different statistics, 1 in 10 patients is developing Long Covid Syndrome (LCS). Currently, there is no validated information on the underlying mechanism for LCS and validated therapeutic interventions are not available. It is therefore important to identify and understand the mechanisms behind the continuing symptoms and to use this improved understanding to provide adequate treatment to patients. This is what the Long COVID project aims to do. The project, coordinated by HUS Helsinki University Hospital (Finland) and including 12 partners from 6 countries (Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Estonia and Switzerland), will study the pathogenesis of LCS by: - conducting geographically diverse cohort and registry studies; - conducting mechanistic studies; - using novel high-throughput methods for biomarker analysis; - conducting interventional and follow-up studies on LCS patients. 👀 Check out our latest publication 👀 ➡ Don’t miss this incredible research article by Tatham et al. which has been published recently in Microbiology Spectrum: 📃 "Ronapreve (REGN-CoV; casirivimab and imdevimab) reduces the viral burden and alters the pulmonary response to the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant (B.1.617.2) in K18-hACE2 mice using an experimental design reflective of a treatment use case" 🔬 This study explores the effect of Ronapreve on viral replication in mice infected with either the Delta or Omicron variants, using a reliable murine SARS-Cov-2 infection model. The results showed that Ronapreve was effective against the Delta variant, reducing virus levels in the lungs and nasal turbinate, and blocking brain infection in mice. However, its ineffectiveness against Omicron was also confirmed. Read the full article here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eCybEman #LongCovid #Research #horizoneurope #covid19research #postcovid

✨Today is #InternationalSelfCareDay, a reminder of the importance of self-care in maintaining overall wellbeing. This is particularly important for people living with #LongCOVID, who face persistent symptoms such as chronic fatigue and cognitive challenges. Self-care can take many forms, from practising mindfulness and meditation to eating healthy foods or taking bath or a walk in nature. For people with Long COVID, self-care practices can help manage symptoms and improve daily functioning. We use this day not only to encourage self-care practices, but also to raise awareness of the ongoing struggles of individuals with Long COVID and the importance of comprehensive support and understanding!💚

🌍🧠 It's #WorldBrainDay2024! Today, let's raise awareness about brain health and the impact of Long COVID. Many people living with Long COVID (LC) experience various cognitive challenges as part of their #LC journey, including memory loss, difficulty concentrating, mental fatigue, and brain fog. Nearly 40 percent of Long COVID patients experience brain fog, which can last for weeks, months or years. The exact causes of the neurological symptoms are not yet fully understood. For this reason, the Long COVID Project is investigating possible causes of the neurological symptoms in Long COVID and possible routes of infection. To do this, the Long COVID Project is investigating different approaches from brain cells, to human mini-brains and pre-clinical models. Let's unite and work together to support the ongoing research and improve the lives of those affected by Long COVID. 🤗 Happy #WBD2024!
