💥 Great news! Sidra -Tul- Muntaha has started as a new Project Manager at Photonics Finland! Her main responsibilities will be to lead and manage our collaborative projects across the Europe during Caroline Amiot’s maternity leave. She will act as the primary point of contact between Photonics Finland, project partners, and European institutions, also facilitate communication and collaboration among all stakeholders. She will participate in Photonics Finland activities such as the Optics & Photonics Days 2025 event, and collaborate with other European partners to apply to new projects. Sidra is originally from Pakistan and six years ago she moved to Finland to built her academic and professional career. She has worked as a Research Scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, gaining valuable experience on Silicon Photonics. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by a master’s degree in Photonics from University of Eastern Finland (UEF). Currently she is completing her PhD in Integrated Photonics through a collaboration between VTT and the UEF, with a focus on integrated optic devices for LiDAR applications. The University of Oulu has a specialized microelectronics research group that focuses on materials, manufacturing processes, and applications. The university also has a Centre of Excellence in Information and Communication Technology, 6G Flagship, which studies radio technologies. Its main focus is on RF (Radio frequency) in the study of components, antennas and circuit design. The university has created circuits and is developing the microelectronics needed in 6G technology in various projects. 6G technology requires considerable development at the component level, and nearly 200 people are conducting this research in Oulu. At the event, we will review the national chips strategy (#EU #Chips #Act) and Finland’s priorities related to it. We recognise considerable potential in the concrete initiatives of the EU Chips Act, which are being implemented through various programmes, such as the pilot line development of the Joint Undertaking programme and future calls for funding. Now is the time to put the plans into practice and start generating genuine added value and business! Photonics is growing at a fast pace: facilities and experts are needed. Alongside Tampere, Oulu and Espoo, Joensuu is one of Finland’s four major hubs for photonics. The city plays a key role in the field’s development. Approximately 15 photonics companies currently operate in the area. Photonics education has grown significantly, and Joensuu produces nearly half of Finnish photonics students.
