We are proud to announce that we will supply the engines and auxiliary equipment for a power plant at the Boto gold mine in Senegal. 🌍 💬 Romain Darracq, Head of Sales Support at Africa Power Services highlights: “The mine is remotely located and has no connection to the grid. This power plant is therefore crucial for its operations, and we needed to find a partner capable of providing reliable supply of electricity. Wärtsilä's track record is outstanding and they were offering the best equipment and best delivery times for this fast-track project." The 17 MW power plant, running on six Wärtsilä 32 engines, will ensure efficient power supply, enabling uninterrupted mining operations. Last week at the World Utilities Congress, our President, Energy, and EVP, Wärtsilä, Anders Lindberg, joined other industry leaders in an insightful panel discussion on a crucial topic in the energy transition: Combatting intermittency challenges with storage and flexibility solutions. Key discussion points: ⚡ ️As investments in renewable energy increase, so does the challenge of intermittency. Flexibility has become critical to fill the gaps left by wind and solar, maintaining grid stability. ⚡ ️Wärtsilä’s engine power plants are pivotal in supporting the transition to renewables, as they provide reliable, on-demand power within 30 seconds and can be shut down at any time without maintenance penalties. ⚡ ️While engine power plants are ideal for minute-level balancing, batteries excel at managing millisecond- or second-level balancing. Both technologies are needed and they work hand-in-hand to ensure grid resilience, enabling dynamic responses to fluctuations. ⚡ ️Switching to 100% hydrogen-ready, utility-scale power plants will be the last step to reach net zero. It was a great opportunity to discuss how flexible solutions can address the challenges of intermittent renewable energy while advancing decarbonisation. Thank you to the fellow panellists – Joe Mastrangelo, Wim Alen, Prof. Phil Hart, Luq Niazi, and Rizwan Razaq – for the lively discussion! 🤝 #WorldUtilitiesCongress #WUC24 #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability
