Balancing technologies and a variety of sustainable fuels will be needed to decarbonise energy sector. This was one of the key insights shared by Wärtsilä’s President & CEO Håkan Agnevall at an Executive Dialogue at the BNEF Summit London earlier this month. The discussion focused on sustainable fuels in shipping and power and was moderated by David Hostert, Global Head of Economics & Modeling, BloombergNEF. 👉 For all insights, listen to the full discussion: https://lnkd.in/d4vkqMPa #EnergyTransition #Decarbonisation #SustainableFuels
Wärtsilä’s President & CEO Håkan Agnevall spoke at an Executive Dialogue at the BNEF Summit London that took place from 8 to 9 October 2024. Moderated by David Hostert, Global Head of Economics & Modeling, BloombergNEF, the dialogue focused on Sustainable Fuels in Shipping and Power. Here are some key takeaways: 🚢 There are many solutions for sustainable fuels, with regional preferences influencing choices. Methanol and ammonia are emerging as prominent options in shipping, but flexibility and efficiency are crucial due to high costs. 🚢 Ship owners are key decision-makers in fuel choice, guided by economic and regulatory factors. Continued dialogue and strategic planning are essential for a sustainable transition. 🚢 EU's ETS scheme and IMO's Carbon Intensity Index are pushing decarbonisation strategies, requiring ship operators to reduce emissions. The transition to alternative fuels is essential for compliance and future-proofing fleets. ⚡The need for balancing power will drastically grow, with renewables projected to make up 50% of global power by 2030. ⚡Increasing renewable energy requires enhanced balancing solutions using thermal flexible engine power plants and batteries on the power sector front. Examples like Texas and Japan illustrate the need for market mechanisms to incentivise balancing technologies. ⚡As part of the energy transition, we need to transition from fossil fuels to a variety of sustainable fuels and eventually reaching full decarbonisation. However, due to the current costs of sustainable fuels, the key will be fuel flexibility, efficiency and to use green fuels for balancing power rather than baseload power in the future. Our engines are renewable energy enablers ✨ Last year we carried out a world-first achievement as our unmodified 50SG engine successfully ran on a 25% hydrogen blend in a commercially operated power plant - all while supplying power to the grid. ️⚡️ Jon Rodriguez, PE, Energy Business Director - Engine Power Plants gave an overview of the project in a recent Edison Electric Institute podcast episode - outlining the project that was executed alongside WEC Energy Group (WEC), EPRI and Burns & McDonnell. In the episode, Jon is joined by WEC’s Daniel Krueger, VP of Infrastructure and Generation Planning and Todd Duffield, Market Strategist, to discuss the impact of the largest grid-connected balancing engine to operate on a hydrogen blend. 🧪 🎧 Listen to the episode: https://lnkd.in/dz6B8gTc 👉 Learn more about how engine power plants can help decarbonize the energy sector: https://lnkd.in/dkbXvE3r #RenewableEnergy #HydrogenTests #GridTechnology
