We have some exciting news to share! 🙌 We've been able to produce world’s first biodegradable plastic from CO2 emissions from waste incineration at our plant in Riihimäki, Finland! This is a remarkable milestone in our Carbon2x program and in our mission to rethink recycling and lead the way towards revolution of materials. “Captured carbon dioxide should be utilized as a new raw material instead of storing it underground or releasing it into the atmosphere when using fuel. Utilizing captured CO2 is a much more sustainable option in terms of tackling resource scarcity in the future. Whereas carbon capture and storage is a linear solution that does not address the growing material shortage, carbon capture and utilization promotes circular economy," says Tony Rehn, Head of the Carbon2x program. ❔ Did you know that Serto detergent bottles are now made from Fortum Circo® recycled plastic? ♻ ✔ Plastic packaging will be subject to a recycled content obligation, which means that by 2030 all non-food contact packaging must contain at least 35% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic - meaning plastic, that has been recycled from consumer plastic waste. Kiilto is leading the way on this, as Serto bottles are already made entirely from Circo recycled plastic. By switching the material from virgin plastic to Circo, Kiilto has reduced the use of virgin plastic by 30 tonnes and reduced its carbon footprint as the #carbonfootprint of Circo is less than half of that of virgin plastic. 🤝 Making #plasticrecycling a reality requires cooperation along the entire value chain and we are happy to walk the talk with Kiilto on Serto bottles! #rethinkingrecycling #recycledplastics #collaboration
We've redesigned the #packaging for our Serto detergent, replacing virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with Fortum Circo® recycled plastic. ♻️ Made from post-consumer plastic packaging collected in Finland, this switch has already made a significant impact, 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝟑𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬! 📉 What makes Fortum Circo® especially appealing is its #carbonfootprint —less than half that of virgin plastic. 🌍 To better understand consumer preferences, we conducted a survey with nearly 600 respondents, and the results were encouraging: → 38% consider sustainability a key factor when purchasing laundry detergents → 75% prefer recycled plastic packaging for liquid laundry detergent "Consumers find [recycled plastic packaging] an easy and effortless way to make more sustainable choices," says Kaisa Tuppura, our Head of Marketing for Consumer Goods, who led this project. At Kiilto, this initiative is part of 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 goal to have 70% of our packaging reused, renewable, or recycled by 2025. 🎯 Our partnership with Fortum has been crucial in achieving this, and we are grateful to their team, especially Anniina Rasmus, for making it all possible. Exciting news for today – we are continuing Recycling & Waste business and operations in new ownership. Summa Equity has signed an agreement to acquire recycling & waste business from Fortum through its portfolio company NG Group. The sale of Recycling & Waste business is an expected and successful outcome of a comprehensive strategic review, which was initiated in autumn 2023 to explore whether the business might find better growth and value-creation opportunities under new ownership. “With great excitement, we’re welcoming a solid new owner, who is committed to growing and developing our business further. Material scarcity is one of the biggest societal challenges we need to solve, and our Waste-to-Materials strategy outlines a solid roadmap to this end. With the commitment of the new owner, we’re able to execute our ambitious roadmap”, says Timo Piispa, Senior Vice President, Fortum Recycling & Waste.
We have today signed an agreement to sell our Recycling & Waste business to Summa Equity. The divestment is in line with our Nordic strategy with focus on clean energy and provides us the opportunity to put enhanced focus on our core operations in clean power generation to drive electrification and build preparedness for future growth. With the new ownership, we see that the Recycling & Waste businesses have even better opportunities to grow: “We are very pleased to have found a very suitable new owner that is well positioned to further enhance and drive future growth opportunities for the recycling and waste business. Next to the clean energy transition, material scarcity is one of the biggest societal challenges we need to solve. Now is the right time for the new owner to take over”, says our President and CEO Markus Rauramo. https://lnkd.in/gvF4HweD
