UN in Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu & Vanuatu

Pleased to meet the UN Resident Coordinator in Fiji, Dirk Wagener, who also covers Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu. The UN has 1,000 agents on the ground in these countries, and some 30 agencies active in all sectors.

#UNDay was celebrated in Vanuatu this week with President H.E. Nikenike Vurobaravu as chief guest. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Matai Seremaiah Nawalu co-hosted the event with the UN, where the President announced land allocation for the construction of UN House in Port Vila. They also discussed accelerating national development and accessing climate and development finance. When the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres recently visited the Hahake coast in Tonga, he saw firsthand the devastating impacts of climate change and rising sea-levels on the Pacific. Yet, amid this harsh reality, the people he met delivered a powerful message: “We are the guardians of the ocean. We are not passive observers of climate change—we are survivors. We will take action, using our traditional knowledge and working with our communities to confront these challenges.” For thousands of years, the people of the #Pacific have lived in harmony with the ocean and nature. The report tracks the gap between where global emissions are heading with current country commitments and where they ought to be to limit warming in line with the Paris Agreement. There is a direct link between increasing emissions and increasingly frequent and intense climate disasters. Yet, annual greenhouse gas emissions reached an all-time high last year. Either leaders bridge the emissions gap, or we plunge headlong into climate disaster – with the poorest and most vulnerable suffering the most. Affordable, existing technologies can achieve the emissions reductions we need to meet the 1.5 degree limit. We need urgent #ClimateAction now. https://lnkd.in/e82cq7vm
