When a student’s behavior is disruptive due to family issues, here’s what I’d do practically: 1. Immediate Response: Calmly redirect the student’s behavior without calling them out in front of others—maybe assigning them a task or seat change to help refocus. 2. Private Check-in: After class, I’d have a quick, non-confrontational chat. Let them know I’m aware something might be going on and offer a safe space to talk. 3. Give Them a Role: Sometimes, giving a disruptive student a leadership role (like handing out materials) helps channel their energy positively. 4. Involve Support: If the behavior persists, I’d loop in a school counselor or involve family (if appropriate) to provide the needed support.

Yes, I navigate classroom challenges with a balance of structure and empathy. When managing disruptive behavior, I first address it calmly and directly, focusing on understanding the root cause. I set clear, consistent expectations while maintaining open communication with the student. By showing empathy and offering support, I help them reflect on their behavior and make better choices, all while preserving the positive atmosphere in the classroom.

When a mentee or student acts out due to any personal issues, empathy is key during every session. Address the behavior calmly without embarrassment, then talk to them privately to understand what's really going on. Offering consistent structure while being flexible with their emotional needs can help them feel more secure. Building trust is essential—when they know you care, the behavior often improves naturally.

A colleague of mine had a student who acted out due to family struggles, and a private conversation revealed their challenges. This was how he navigated the whole situation: he responded by offering flexibility in deadlines and seating arrangements to minimize disruptions. He went on to regularly check on the affected student, and was very patient. He even also collaborated with the school counselors to help address the emotional and classroom behavior of the affected student. In two words, he cared. Thankfully, it was enough for this particular case.
