    In May 2023, we conducted a comprehensive study commissioned by a leading Asian OEM, focusing on the cell-to-pack strategy of the Zeekr 009 and the structural battery pack design of the Tesla Model Y. Our research revealed pivotal findings in three key areas: battery cells, cooling plates, and the venting system. As the demand for affordable, lightweight, and high-energy-density batteries in electric vehicles continues to rise, these insights are crucial.     🔋 Elevating EV Performance with High Specific Energy Density. As the race towards a sustainable future accelerates, electric vehicle manufacturers are honing in on one of the most critical parameters: high specific energy density, calculated as the ratio between the energy (Wh) and the weight of the battery pack (kg). Achieving this milestone enables benefits that enhance both vehicle performance and user experience: - Increased range: a higher specific energy density translates to a lower overall weight, allowing EVs to travel further on a single charge. - Better performance and lower operating costs: improved energy density boosts vehicle performance, making EVs more efficient and cost-effective for the driver. - Compact design: optimizing space with high energy density batteries allows for more spacious and comfortable vehicle interiors. Our Study 📊 With the world's most extensive automotive database at its core, A2MAC1 - Decode the future has analyzed the specific energy density of the 21 best-selling EV models, and found that the Zeekr 009 leads the pack with the highest specific energy density. This is due to: - Cells with high nickel content, to boost energy storage capacity. - Composite current collector: using PET-covered aluminum reduces weight. -Cell-to-Pack concept: to minimize the space taken by battery modules, enhancing overall efficiency. To provide an initial overview of the study, we categorized the 21 vehicles (including the Zeekr 009) based on their regions of production: 8 from North America, 4 from Europe, and 8 from China. We then compared the average specific energy density of each group to that of the Zeekr 009. The results are displayed in the infographic below.     Elena Zhelondz, Senior Cost-Engineer from A2MAC1, shares exclusive insights into costs for series production. Summary in the images. Her insights come from the A2MAC1 database about In-Cabin sensors in series production, which she opend for our White Paper on 2D and 3D in-cabin automotive sensors. Trends, costs and distribution of sensors for series production – here’s what we learned from Elena: 👉 Role of 2D and 3D sensors for in-cabin monitoring 2D sensors (NIR, RGB) are currently the most common in-cabin monitoring modules. Although 3D sensors (Tof & stereo NIR cameras) provide more information, they are associated with slightly higher costs due to additional hardware requirements. However, for most OEMs, 2D data has been sufficient for current use cases. We expect more 3D sensing in the future. 👉Types of Sensors 1.    Most common are NIR monochrome cameras in series production cars, to capture facial expressions and eye and head movements - even at night or through sunglasses. Primarily for alerting driver fatigue or distraction. 2.    Second largest share are regular RGB cameras. They are less effective in the dark and mainly used for entertainment. 3.    RGB-IR Cameras combine RGB with NIR for enhanced cabin monitoring and color fidelity. 4.    Sensors like Radar and Ultrasonic sensors are used for passenger detection without video recording capabilities. They are very cost-effective. 👉Main Locations - Predominantly location of Driver Monitoring Cameras (DMCs) is on the steering column/cluster (60%), A-pillar (25%), and rear-view mirror (7%). -Interior Surveillance Sensors are positioned centrally and high-mounted for optimal visibility, with RGB cameras near the front roof module, and radar/ultrasonic sensors above the second row. - Gesture Control and Face Recognition Cameras are positioned on the dashboard or roof module, focusing on the driver’s face for driver monitoring and face recognition.
