[Preserving water in the desert] 🎬 A few weeks ago, we showed you how acacias are used in agroforestry to preserve natural resources in the Sahel . Today, we’re unveiling the 2nd video in our series focused on how acacias help create and preserve water resources in the desert. 💧 Acacias roots are composed of a central pivot that descends into the water table and a lateral root system that prevents soil degradation. By capturing and retaining water, even very deep in the ground, they enable small bushes and grass to grow, which in turn encourages water runoff into the soil and helps preserve the water table. They also act as a natural barrier to desertification and nourish the soil, making it more fertile. 🌳 As well as being a decisive element in the fight against global warming, acacias represent a major source of income for the communities who cultivate them. They also play an important role in daily life, providing timber, food, energy, medicine and fodder for livestock. [𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐠𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲] 🍷 In accordance with the European Union 2021/2117 Regulation, published on 2 December 2021, new labels will soon be appearing on wine bottles with a list of the ingredients they contain. Some of you will be surprised to learn that acacia gum, also known as E414, makes an appearance. 🍷 Acacia gum acacia has been used in wine since the early 20th century and is added prior to bottling to: · limit sediment by stabilising the colouring matter · preserve the wine's colour over time · preserve the clarity of the wine Alland & Robert joined forces with BIOLAFFORT, a leading private oenology research and innovation centre, to conduct an in-depth study of wine stabilisation mechanisms when acacia gum is used. 🎤 “Acacia gum is unique and extremely effective even in tiny doses – 0.3g/litre of wine on average,” explains Isabelle Jaouen, R&D Director, Alland & Robert. She adds: “Acacia gum has long been used empirically without really understanding the mechanisms acting on colloids, which stabilize the colouring matter in wines. [𝘼𝙘𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙖 𝙜𝙪𝙢 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙝𝙚𝙡] 🌳 Have you heard of agroforestry? It’s a set of farming practices that brings all kinds of trees together with agricultural crops and even livestock on the same plot of land. This increases production, diversifies income and ecological services, and helps preserve and renew natural resources including water, as well as soil fertility and biodiversity. 🌿 Alland & Robert acacia gum is produced in the Sahel and comes from wild trees or trees grown according to agroforestry principles. Acacias, from which the gum is extracted, act as a natural barrier to sand and wind, increasing soil fertility and stabilizing the water supply.
