TBML is a cross-jurisdictional and threat multiplier. TBML is broadly defined as the process of disguising the proceeds of crime and moving value through the use of trade transactions in an attempt to legitimate their illicit origins. TBML is often converges with other types of crime, such as illicit trade, drug-trafficking, human trafficking, counterfeiting, terrorism financing, corruption, illegal tobacco trade, and the smuggling and trafficking of other illicit goods and contraband. While there are no official statistics on the scale of TBML globally, according to numerous studies, it is estimated at several hundreds of billions of dollars every year. Another great day (Day 3) representing and supporting our business and industry members from Business at OECD (BIAC) and United States Council for International Business (USCIB) at the OECD - OCDE - OCDE Working Party on Countering Illicit Trade (WP-CIT), and at the 1st OECD Forum on Countering Illicit Trade. At today’s Forum's Strategic Dialogue: "Trade-Based Money Laundering: Trends and Global Challenges", it was an honor to moderate a super session with a distinguished group of leading AML/TBML officials and experts examining the growing illicit trade and criminal threats and challenges: Michael Morantz, Marco B., Yevheniy Umanets, Leonor Sanhueza Arancibia. Given the complexity of TBML, it requires public-private partnerships and international cooperation across sectors and communities. This may include: greater OECD WP-CIT and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) cooperation and synergies, along with other partners, to counter illicit trade and predicate crimes of money laundering and TBML including in Free Trade Zones (FTZs). UNODC World Customs Organization INTERPOL Also great to see our BIAC and USCIB member, Amazon, Kebaru Smith, Director Associate General Counsel, Amazon Counterfeit Crime Unit (CCU) participate in the Strategic Dialogue on "Public-Private Partnerships: A Path to Mitigate Illicit Trade". Excellent to hear Baroness Theresa May, Chair of the Global Commission on Modern Slavery, Former UK Prime Minister emphasize the importance of fighting corruption in countering human trafficking, and taking a threat convergence framework to dismantle the global ecosystem of criminality and illicit economies. #illicittrade #threatconvergence #tbml #moneylaundering #freetradezones

Yesterday, I was pleased to present several proposals on behalf of Business at OECD (BIAC) members to help advance the OECD Trade and Agriculture's work and enhance the evidence-basis for countering #IllicitTrade. This was a key example of Business at OECD (BIAC)'s role as the voice of the private sector at OECD level, highlighting how industry can advise and partner with governments to tackle global economic challenges.

Falsification of medical products is a form of illicit trade that poses a significant threat to personal and public health. Novartis program on Combating Falsified Medicines aims at protecting patients’ safety and is one of the significant parts of our corporate governance and reporting. Read more on Novartis' position here: https://lnkd.in/gQ-9bqxQ I was grateful to participate in the 1st OECD - OCDE Forum on Countering Illicit Trade, where I presented an introductory keynote at the panel »Understanding Illicit Trade: Data, Evidence and Challenges«: - Novartis is, along with other pharmaceutical companies, actively involved in monitoring and forensic testing to provide actionable intelligence to authorities, ensuring that serious patient safety impacts are identified and addressed. - Collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential. It promotes collective action by combining efforts for data collection and sharing. I would like to thank the OECD's Working Party on Countering Illicit Trade, Business at OECD (BIAC)'s Anti-Illicit Trade Expert Group, and the Transnational Alliance to Combat Illicit Trade. This effective public-private dialogue has resulted in impactful policy recommendations and tools such as the TRACIT Illicit Trade Index and the OECD Free Trade Zone Certification on combating illicit trade. #illicittrade #oecd #ethicaleadership Simona Seikyte Rich Corken Hansueli Stamm Nathan W.
