What is an Emission Factor? 🤔⬇️ An emission factor tells us how much greenhouse gas (GHG) is released by specific activities, like energy use in manufacturing or producing raw materials 🧵 It’s essential for calculating the environmental footprint of a product by converting activity data (like dyeing, spinning, or shipping) into GHG emissions. For example, when calculating the emissions of a cotton fabric, we look at: 🌾 Cotton farming emissions – Emissions from cotton production (e.g., kg CO2e/kg cotton). ⚙️ Processing emissions – Emissions from production steps like dyeing (e.g., kg CO2e/kg fabric). ➡️ Total emissions – The total impact of the finished fabric (e.g., kg CO2e/kg fabric). At Carbonfact, when a brand provides primary data directly from their supply chain or production processes, we use that to ensure the most accurate results. But in cases where primary data isn’t available, we rely on Ecoinvent, one of the most comprehensive and widely used life cycle assessment (LCA) databases. Ecoinvent provides reliable, up-to-date data on energy, raw materials, and manufacturing processes, allowing us to create accurate emission factors based on global industry standards. This spring, we integrated Ecoinvent 3.10 into our LCA engine and updated our energy emission factors to reflect the most recent data. Read all about it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKizjkU5

Measuring the carbon footprint of Adore Me x EverDye Halloween capsule 🎃✨ We’re thrilled to see Adore Me’s first-ever partnership with Ever Dye come to life in a special Halloween capsule collection! 🤯The pigments used to dye these styles are bio-sourced components and were created according to Green Chemistry Principles. 🤯These pigments can be dyed at room temperature — allowing for the use of about 10x less energy during the dyeing process compared to conventional methods. 🤯Because less energy is used in the dyeing process, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by a factor of 4. We’re proud to support this collaboration by helping Adore Me measure and understand the carbon impact of their products! Below, find a picture of Martin Daniel, co-founder of Carbonfact, holding one of the t-shirt from the collection!

Get specific with custom emission factors 🧵 While Carbonfact has a robust materials library, many brands use unique materials or new innovations that require custom solutions. Carbonfact’s science team helps clients measure the environmental footprint of innovative materials and processes by building tailored emission factors. Here are some recent examples: 👟 Emission factor for foamed EVA, a modified version of standard EVA often used in footwear production. ⚡ Custom factor for rubber sourced from a supplier that uses renewable energy in Italy, which significantly differed from generic rubber data. 👜 Bespoke emission factors for leather sourced from different regions, as the environmental footprint varies widely between locations such as Italy and China. Curious to learn about types of bespoke emission factors and the unique needs of apparel and footwear brands? Read all about it in our blog here: https://lnkd.in/en8XEyy6
