Security mechanisms over R-GOOSE messages - Online Webinar 🔥 Join D2 and Brasil NGN for the webinar scheduled for 22 November 2024. CIGRE Tech Talks is an initiative of CIGRE-Brasil, through the D2 Study Committee on Information Systems, Telecommunications and Cybersecurity. Power grids are increasingly digitalised, cybersecurity is no longer just a concern—it's a critical necessity. The Routable Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (R-GOOSE) protocol, a cornerstone of IEC 61850-based systems, has emerged as a key player in safeguarding our power infrastructure. Modern power grids are vulnerable to a range of cyberattacks, from malicious malware to data interception. These threats can disrupt power supply, compromise system integrity, and even lead to catastrophic blackouts. The presentation addresses key cybersecurity challenges faced by modern grids, including vulnerabilities to attacks such as malware and data interception. Next, it explores the operation of R-GOOSE and the necessity of securing communications through authentication, encryption, and the adoption of standards. This webinar is open to all CIGRE members and non-members at no cost. See the registration link below: https://lnkd.in/dHAsyVDS

New Working Group (WG) Alert 🔥 Study Committee D2 is delighted to share the approved ToR D2.61 "High Voltage Power Line Carrier Communications Current State and Future Application". High voltage power line carrier communicates is the oldest type of telecommunications used in power grids. Phase conductors of the high voltage power lines are used for transmission of different information signals such as voice, data, teleprotection. 20-25 years ago, a major part of telecommunication channels in electrical power grids were based on application of PLC technologies. In countries with historically developed electricity power transmission networks, large numbers of substations and large territories, the number of HV PLC channels can be in the thousands. The objective is to review the current state of high voltage power line carrier (HV PLC) communications in power grids globally. This includes applications such as backup channels, specialized telecommunications for emergencies, ruggedized secure channels for accessing multiplexers and network equipment to ensure rapid recovery in case of cyber threats, and the use of HV PLC for monitoring overhead line (OHL) conditions. Additionally, the research will explore the application of a new class of digital PLC—wideband digital power line carrier with packet switching—for specialized coupling schemes like intra-bundle coupling, enabling megabit bitrates for HV PLC. The study will also forecast the future role of HV PLC in power grids. The Call for Members is looking to attract Experts from around the world to have an input on this WG. SC D2 wants more Next Generation Network (NGN) and Women in Energy (WiE) to participate on this WG. See below the link to join the WG: https://lnkd.in/dkPyFEsX Please send the proposed WG member names and CVs to the convenor, Anton Merkulov, Ph.D, SMIEEE , contact the SC D2 Chair Victor Tan, SC D2 Secretary Marcelo Araujo or Advisory Group Leader Zwelandile Mbebe (Pr Eng, SM SAIEE). Alternatively, contact the National Committee Representatives or send DM to this page. We ask you to send this information by 30 November 2024.

Congratulations to Giovanna and Ramon on their outstanding achievement! Their exceptional work on SC D2 for the Paris Session held in August 2024 has truly set a new standard. Producing the best two papers is a testament to their dedication, talent, and innovative thinking. Every Paris Session, each Study Committee selects 2 best papers from countless brilliant minds, only the two papers namely Cybersecurity In the Loop for multi energy infrastructures ( Paper 10401) Giovanna Dondossola and Quantum Key Distribution for MPLS-TP Traffic Encryption (Paper 10758) Ramon Baechli. These papers were selected and reviewed by Reviewers and Senior Reviewers prior to acceptance for the Paris Session. After this rigorous process, the papers were then selected by the Special Reporters , Advisory Group Leaders and SC chairman Victor Tan. There were 76 papers accepted for this Paris Session. Well done to all the authors! The two exceptional papers selected for the Paris Session will soon grace the pages of the next CIGRE Science & Engineering installment. This prestigious publication, revered by academics and industry professionals alike. This journal is the flagship of technical paper publications in CIGRE. It meets CIGRE’s desire to broaden its publication to articles of interest for its members and non-members, globally. Once again we Congratulate Giovanna Dondossola from Italy and Ramon Baechli from Switzerland and their co-authors for receiving the best 2 paper Award SC D2, 2024 Paris Session
