Check out the #maps the #STEPUP team crafted utilizing #GIS mapping techniques as part of their recent #ScientificResearch endeavor. STEP UP, funded by Fondazione Cariplo and spearheaded by Transform Transport in collaboration with TeMA Lab - Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Sex & the City APS, and Walk21 Foundation, is dedicated to addressing #SpatialEquity with a keen focus on #walkability from a gender-specific perspective. Recognizing that #women+ experience #urban environments differently from men, the project employs data-driven methodologies to delve into this crucial matter. At the heart of the research lies the investigation of factors influencing women+'s perceived #safety while navigating the streets of #Milan, especially during nighttime. But how do we measure safety perception effectively? To bridge the gap between this complex phenomenon and #data, the STEP UP team analyzed data gathered from the Wher App, a route planner app operated by Walk21, where women in Milan shared their perceptions of safety on approximately 67% of the city's streets. To further comprehend the intricate relationship between safety factors and perceived safety, they delved deeper into spatial features using a variety of geolocated datasets. The analysis enabled them to categorize areas of the city based on their relation with three statistically relevant indicators: public lighting; frequency of street-level #PublicTransport services at night and presence of food and drinks destinations. This resulted in the identification of areas of Milan that could benefit from improvements with respect to these three indicators, covering about 60% of the streets of Milan: https://lnkd.in/eUuudRb9 Dive into Milan's safety landscape!
