🌍 "Earth System & Integrated Assessment Models currently operate independently". 💡What are we doing to change that? 1️⃣ Enhancing the internal consistency of the ESM-IAM modelling framework. 2️⃣ Enabling ESMs to operate on an emission-driven basis rather than concentration-driven. This transition marks a significant step toward improving the overall consistency of the ‘climate stream’ and achieving a ‘closed loop’ in the ESM-IAM framework. This has profound implications for climate policy. 🔍 Here’s how: 1️⃣ More accurate risk evaluation: We’re improving how we assess land-use strategies like afforestation and BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture & Storage) and the capacity of land sinks for carbon removal. 2️⃣ Better understanding of the land carbon cycle: By enhancing the treatment of the land carbon cycle, we’re able to offer more robust pathways for land-based mitigation that fully account for uncertainties. 3️⃣ New emission-driven capabilities in ESMs: This will provide deeper insights into carbon cycle uncertainties and their implications for actionable policies—helping us understand the challenges ahead more clearly. 🌍💡 Tackling a major challenge in climate modelling: inconsistent treatment of uncertainties throughout the model chain between Earth System Models (ESMs) and Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs). At #ESM2025, we’re addressing these issues by improving how uncertainties in climate outputs affect mitigation outputs—making the entire framework more consistent. 🔍 How are we doing this? 1️⃣ Improving Global Mean Temperature (GMT) targets: We're enhancing the way temperature targets are passed from the MAGICC climate model to the REMIND IAM (@PIK_Climate). Previously, carbon budgets were set externally, introducing extra uncertainties. Now, we're streamlining this process, making it more accurate. 2️⃣ Aligning temperature calculations: By fine-tuning MAGICC to better reflect ESM temperature uncertainties, we’re improving how REMIND receives temperature targets, leading to a more cohesive integration of uncertainties. 3️⃣ Addressing land stream carbon cycle uncertainties: These uncertainties impact land-based mitigation strategies like afforestation and BECCS. We're calibrating MAGICC’s carbon cycle parameters directly with ESM simulations, ensuring advances in carbon cycle modelling are fully integrated. 4️⃣ Enhancing land-use modelling: Instead of relying on external models, we’re incorporating carbon stocks and bioenergy yields directly from ESMs’ Land-Surface Models (LSMs). This provides a more consistent representation of land-use impacts. 5️⃣ ‘Closing the loop’ of carbon cycle info: We're establishing a direct flow of carbon sink data from MAgPIE to MAGICC, ensuring that land-use information is consistently passed through the entire model chain. 🚀 Finally, a significant goal is enabling ESMs to operate on an emission-driven basis instead of concentration-driven. This marks a major advancement for the climate stream, bringing us closer to a fully integrated ESM-IAM framework. Spend your coffee break with CLIM4cities project member, Ana Patrícia Oliveira from +ATLANTICAna Patrícia Oliveira is an expert in Earth Observation (EO) with a specialization in Machine Learning (ML) applications for climate change hazard mapping and impact assessment. She holds a PhD from the MIT Portugal Program, where she researched the interaction between air temperatures and urban environments, including the influence of regional wind flows, focusing on several coastal cities in southern Europe. During her PhD, she developed empirical models to estimate atmospheric canopy layer and land surface urban heat island (UHI) intensities in two Mediterranean cities using open science methods, EO, and climate data. Ana will be presenting the CLIM4cities project, focusing on the #ArtificalIntelligence solution for urban climate, which is being scaled up within a Danish context in the project 📅 Mark your calendars for 17 October and register here: https://lnkd.in/d4KvEdY8

Physical Inconsistencies in Climate Modelling: How better linking ESMs and IAMs Can Improve Climate Scenario Generation 🌍 Have you heard of physical inconsistencies in our state-of-the-art climate modelling chain? This chain, used in assessments like those from the IPCC, depends on a consistent flow of information between Earth System Models (ESMs) and Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs). However, gaps in the information flow between these models still pose challenges in accurately predicting climate outcomes. 🌐 In the current framework, ESMs simulate the Earth's physical and biological systems, while IAMs focus on socio-economic factors and mitigation strategies. But even in the most advanced frameworks, these two types of models operate largely independently, with no closed-loop feedbacks between them. This disconnect creates two largely independent information streams: 1️⃣ The Climate Stream translates emissions into GHG concentrations for climate projections. 2️⃣ The Land Stream handles land-use and carbon cycle feedbacks, crucial for understanding land-based mitigation strategies. 🌀 What does this mean for climate modelling? 🌡️ In the Climate Stream, IAMs generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios, while Simple Climate Models (SCMs) translate those emissions into GHG concentrations, which are then used as inputs for ESMs. However, IAMs don't fully integrate the uncertainties from ESM outputs—such as global mean temperature (GMT)—into their techno-economic dynamics, limiting their ability to provide comprehensive projections. 🌱 In the Land Stream, ESMs provide key data like temperature, precipitation, and CO2 concentrations, which inform models of crop yields, carbon density, and water availability. Yet, the RCPs (Representative Concentration Pathways) used here are from a previous generation compared to the Climate Stream, leading to inconsistencies in land-use and land-based mitigation strategies assessments. 🔄 Why is this important? By improving the integration between these streams, we can enhance our understanding of how human and natural systems will respond to different climate futures. Strengthening the collaboration between ESM and IAM communities is crucial for moving towards a more comprehensive, accurate picture of climate change and mitigation pathways, especially those including land-based strategies. 💡 The ESM2025 project is at the forefront of bridging these gaps. With contributions from ESMs ICON, CNRM-ESM, IPSL-CM, UKESM, NorESM, and REMIND-MAGPIE IAM, we’re working to ensure that the latest advances in both ESMs and IAMs are reflected in a more robust climate modelling chain. 👉 Curious to learn more about how we’re advancing this climate modelling framework?
