🆕 EU foreign policy: a reboot is urgent
The world has changed. The EU needs to change too. Our current foreign policy approach, designed for a more peaceful world where #multilateralism was strong, no longer works.
We propose 🔟 actionable ideas for the new EU leadership. #10IdeasEU
1. 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 to replace the one-size-fits-all European Neighbourhood Policy.
2. 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭: increase the EU's power of attraction & support partners’ further integration and resilience.
3. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐄𝐔-#𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Beijing is not willing to restrain Moscow. The EU must then reassess its relationship with China accordingly.
4. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 #𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞: make EU leaders responsible for protecting Europeans.
5. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: open #CFSP to likeminded and capable countries as a first step towards EU accession.
6. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐮𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬: establish targeted partnerships with select groupings of countries, rather than investing in broad but vague multilateral frameworks.
7. 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 #𝐂𝐒𝐃𝐏 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: focus on protecting maritime routes & solving crises in the immediate neighbourhood.
8. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 #𝐔𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞: enable them to take back territory.
9. 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭: strengthen #energy resilience through innovation in the #Baltic.
10. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐫 𝐢𝐧 #𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚: mobilise economic resources to dissuade China from starting a war.
