Bidding a fond farewell to one of our most hardworking Birds, EUTELSAT 33E 🛰 EUTELSAT 33E has been successfully re-orbited to a height of 369km above the GEO arc in a safe condition with an orbit and configuration fully compliant with French Space Law and in accordance with various other international recommendations. Launched in 2009, the satellite was initially located at 7.3°W and commercialised under the name Atlantic Bird 4A, paving the way for one of our most successful video hotspots at 7/8 degrees West. It was then relocated in 2011 to 3.1°E where it operated as EUTELSAT 3C, before moving again in 2013 to 13°E under the designation Hotbird 13D. It provided its final commercial service at 33.1°E as EUTELSAT 33E from 2016. During its operational lifetime, it maintained an incredible overall service reliability of over 99.9999%. The satellite was used for the first ever live, in-orbit test of a unique system developed jointly by Eutelsat and Airbus to detect and control spacecraft attitude relying on transmissions through the payload. And in a final flourish, EUTELSAT 33E was the first planned re-orbit of a Eurostar 3000 platform. Commenting, Paul Turner, Director of Satellite Operations at Eutelsat Group, said: “We wish EUTELSAT 33E a well-earned retirement after 15 years of consistent service. Congratulations and thank you to all the teams who contributed to the successes of the satellite throughout its lifetime, from procurement to the recent reorbiting mission.”

Alongside our aviation partners at Intelsat, we’ve been nominated for the APEX Innovation Award for Best Inflight Connectivity Solution thanks to the multi-orbit network we're delivering to airlines ✈️ Together, we are changing the inflight connectivity narrative, using our combined GEO-LEO services to deliver a seamless connected experience wherever a passenger is flying – over the oceans, on polar routes, or in congested airspace. The OneWeb LEO network of over 600 satellites provides low latency to power data-rich applications, such as cloud computing, online gaming and web browsing and is the perfect complement to Intelsat's high-throughput, resilient GEO network. Our team of aviation connectivity experts will be on-site at APEX Expo in California next week, ready to talk to customers about the solutions we can provide. If you’d like to meet with us, please contact our team at aviation@oneweb.net.
