Changing its Cloud provider is never small potatoes, especially when a platform operates up to 40,000 containers and has about 4 million unique visitors a day to its website. Yet Back Market made the move from AWS to Google Cloud Platform motivated primarily by … sustainability concerns! In this episode its CTO, Dawn Baker, chats with Gaël DUEZ and covers a wide range of GreenOps topics such as:    ☁️ Why they switched from AWS to GCP    📏 The needed granularity in carbon measurement     💸 Why FinOps is a no brainer to boost sustainability    🏦 The importance of carbon P&L in decision making    ⚖️ The Dilemma of running GreenOps between carbon reduction and faster cloud instances    And much more! Listen to this episode the way you want on your favorite podcast platforms or here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dwgpEagP Thanks to Guillaume Mazollier and Antonin Mellier for having answered Gaël Duez’s questions and help us deliver a better episode 🙏 Thank you Patrick Fulop for the connection! 🙏 You might be interested in this episode (either because we mentioned you or because you’re all-in #digitalsustainability):  Florian Valeye, Dimitri Baeli, Théotime Lévèque, Guillaume Grillat, Flavia Paganelli #greenops #cloud

Sustainability Strategist 🌱helping Tech companies leverage IT in a responsible way | Speaker | Podcaster 🎙️

Sorry I'm late! 🙏 I'm late publishing the 54th episode of Green IO 🎙️ with Joanne Stone and Joanna Masraff 🌱 (tomorrow if my Internet connection is back – Thanks Garance cyclone for this!) I'm late supporting #internationalwomenday (more on this later) And I'm late celebrating! Green IO turned 3 years last month and it's time for our yearly transparency check 🕵 📈 Could we have some vanity metrics? With several thousands listeners per month, across 50+ countries, and more than 1,5K followers across different platforms all indicators seem to be green. As usual, I'm very cautious about podcast metrics, but I couldn't not see the rising number of people which I interact with telling me “Of course Gaël, I'm already a regular listener” 😊 🎙️ What about our guests? We welcomed 36 guests from 18 countries covering topics from hyperscalers to SEO, assessment matrix, the gaming industry, etc. More than ever, Green IO is a generalist media within the IT sustainability niche. I realized that being really fed-up about the AI hype and non-sense, I actually didn't cover it in 2024. Maybe it was a bit too much... 😅 I intend to have thorough discussions with responsible AI experts this semester to catch-up. I also decided to stop doing country-focus episodes which are consistently among the lower performers. I will simply keep on inviting guests from all over the world for topic-focus episodes and ask them also about the situation in their geographical area. Best of both world 😉 By the way, I went for a quiet March 8th. Because for the second year in a row, we comfortably reached gender parity. Because, it should be the norm for any podcast including those in the IT industry. Because sometime, we should live room in these noisy social networks for people having important news to share. 🙃 What were our top failures? N°1 - YouTube. “Gaël, this is the rising platform for podcast”, “YouTube is the 3rd podcast platform now”,... Well maybe but not for our listeners 🙂. Or maybe being a podcaster on YouTube requires massive promotion and an intensive use of video which I don't have neither the time, nor the money to do. Plus it would be quite inconsistent with the frugality that we're promoting. So we'll keep posting there for our few followers but without any specific effort. N°2 - Global South Only 2 guests where located in the “Global South” over the last 12 months. This became a growing concern for me when I realized how a single episode with Paz Peña Ochoa and Pablo José Gámez Cersosimo was an eye opener on several topics. I'm now actively looking for a wider geographical diversity of guests. 🎁 It's a birthday, shouldn't we have a gift? Yes we should. Please check the first comment (no marketing tricks just LinkedIn limitation on post size 😅 ) And of course, I couldn't close this celebration without a warm thanks to all the 2024 guests. 🙏🙏🙏 (names in the comment as well for the same reason as above 🙄)

Gaël DUEZ, Green IO podcast host invites Dawn Baker, Back Market CTO to join him in 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟱𝟯 to talk about #GreenOps. Her expertise spans software engineering, project management, service delivery and leadership. Learn valuable lessons on #GreenOps here: 🔽 Back Market - 260 engineers, operating up to 40,000 containers, and website traffic reaches 4 million unique visitors per day. Back Market is also a mission-driven B Corp with an objective to keep e-waste out of landfill. A 2024 financial review led to an infrastructure recast  -  a great opportunity “to ask ourselves on which platforms do we want to be hosted”. 🔁𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 Cost control is a vital part of any business strategy, yet the biggest factor in changing cloud providers was having visibility of CO2 emissions with the GKE option for tracking. The switching to locations powered by renewable energy was important, ensuring teams could align tasks and impact. Migrating infrastructure from AWS to Google Cloud Platform took less than 6 months.   📊𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 Accuracy of data and granularity have improved through using Google Cloud Platform. Operational efficiency is gained, and sustainability is becoming more visible across the organization. Back Market also has ambitions to gain greater insights on what it costs to serve users for specific functionalities. Optimizing code, using less CPU, and using less energy are key drivers, having a direct positive impact too on all important costs. Identifying renewable energy sources for powering data centers, plus scheduling big workloads when grid load is lighter are examples of actions to be prioritized.   ⚙️𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 Without a dedicated FinOps team, focus is on synapse. Each team has an identified lead, and who is also responsible for increasing visibility on carbon reduction. In-house tools will be developed to provide real insights for engineers to make decisions that impact C emissions. Web v. app, and hardware refresh are both important debates to be had. 🌎𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱-𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Back Market aims to be Carbon, grid, and data management aware, with dashboards that make us accountable and drive positive action. By changing mindsets, Back Market is already on a Carbon P&L management journey. Recent European legislation also helps, as does employee engagement -CTOs are now working with a younger workforce who are acutely aware of the environmental crises facing our society. 🎙️ Listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/dwgpEagP 📰 Read the wrap-up article here: https://lnkd.in/gGjj3xxq

Are you considering joining a Green IO Conference this year? You already know how enthusiastic we are about building them but what about the attendees? 💡We asked some of our previous conference participants why did they join Green IO Singapore last year. “There are so many reasons, it's fun, [and] insights are amazing. But I think whatever your domain is, sustainability is bound to be something that affects your business and your personal life. So just for that reason, because you want to know how sustainability affects you and you want to know how you can contribute to sustainability, especially on the aspect of digital sustainability, that's why you want to be here, to hear about what the scene is like. What the trends are? And when you leave the conference, you leave being better informed and hopefully also enthused to make a difference to the scene.” - Joshua Au, Senior Public Affairs Manager, Huawei Singapore “I joined because it's a topic I'm passionate about, and it's also now integrated into my everyday work at Palo Alto. It's also great that this is the first Green IO conference in Singapore, and it kind of indicates where the country we're moving in this space, so that's also very exciting. And the line-up of speakers, the topics, yeah, that really interests me.” - Venetia Foo, Agile Coach, PALO IT Considering joining? Want to know more about WordPress & Sustainability? - It’s all here ⬇️ 3 members of the original WordPress sustainability team joined Gaël DUEZ in episode 52 of Green IO podcast to give an update on what is currently happening in the WordPress sustainability community. Csaba Varszegi is a sustainable web designer, Nahuai Badiola is a freelance WordPress developer, podcaster and blogger, and Nora Ferreirós is a freelance UX/UI designer whose approach is driven by the impact of her work on people and the planet. 🌱Humble beginnings For Nahuai, the sustainability journey began whilst listening to a WordCamp talk by Roberto Vázquez about data center energy consumption. His personal interest and momentum developed, reaching out to influential actors such as Hannah Smith (see E5 Greening WordPress). Nora explains how Nahuai encouraged her to ask a question about sustainability at the annual WordCamp 2022, recalling “There was applause from the audience, which showed there was enthusiasm for the subject”. This community support led to the Direction authorizing a Slack channel. Csaba explains that it was ‘..a reflection on how to add impact at a wider scale, not just act at an individual level’. He was one of the first people to join the new WP sustainability community. 👏WP sustainability community & role The aim was to keep everything simple, increase accessibility to and uptake of sustainability issues and actions. Focus was on: - producing sustainability guidelines - developing plugins & carbon footprint tools - aspiring to renewable energy hosting  Guests acknowledge the complexity of the task and the difficulties of volunteering - collaboration and transparency are key. ⚙️WordPress Ecosystem The WordPress ecosystem is a complex one. WordPress.com is a (for-profit) hosted blogging service which uses WordPress open source CMS currently owned by Automattic Inc. WordPress.org provides tools to build a website from scratch on your own hosting. The WordPress Foundation is a not-for-profit entity without strategic assets, yet to which Automattic.Inc gave the commercial rights to the WP trademark. ❓Dismantling of Sustainability Team All three guests were clearly surprised at the decision taken to dismantle the group, yet it is all set in the context of Automattic’s current legal battles with WP Engine. Internal politics are powerful, showing that transparent governance is at the heart of any sustainability agenda. ✅ Moving forward, staying positive The 3 guests were unsure as to how sustainability work will be carried on, but were adamant that it will continue! And all three guests continue to drive sustainability forward as Nahuai was selected for a GWF fellowship producing 8 podcast episodes about WP and the sustainability community; Nora is an active part of the GWF working group on grid-aware computing; and Csaba champions digital sustainability on a daily basis. And anyone can get in contact to help direct the next steps!

“Today I learned that we have a sustainability team.Thank you for your effort in this area, looking at results of the team so far, and the ROI of time invested, it's probably a good time to officially dissolve the team entirely”.   In 3 sentences, almost 3 years of work from the #WordPress Sustainability Group vanished and their Slack channel archived on the spot. To get clarity on what happened at WordPress and to understand what a WordPress practitioner can do to reduce the environmental footprint of her digital services, Gaël DUEZ welcomes 3 of the 4 founders of the original sustainability team: Csaba Varszegi, Nahuai Badiola, and Nora Ferreirós.  In their much more nuanced exchange that could have been expected due to the current situation, they covered many topics including:    👏 The power of applause to kick start a sustainability team    🔧 How changing HTTPS check made WordPress save 471 kWh / month    🌱 The importance of having sustainability tools as close as possible to software practitioners tools    🏛️ The subtle art of creating a foundation while keeping control over it via intellectual property      🎁 How to “enforce” contribution in an open source community    And much more!
