Following Boston and NYC, Emmanuel Ullmo and I spent a couple of days in #Texas, where Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques - IHES's partner organization in the US, Friends of IHES, had never been until now. We express our deepest gratitude to Consul General of France Valérie Baraban and her team, who welcomed us in Houston and facilitated key contacts, as well as to Caroline Levander and Meredith Bonner who organized a great visit of Rice University for us as well as our colleagues Frédéric Worms, Cedric Guillerme and Caroline GUÉNY-MENTRÉ from Ecole normale supérieure and its Foundation. Special thanks also go to Fondation ENGIE which supported our visit to Houston. While Emmanuel visited the physics department and gave a colloquium talk to his math colleagues, I enjoyed a special campus tour and got a chance to meet Amy Dittmar as well as Ronica Smucker. The visit concluded with an exclusive dinner hosted by Caroline Levander, attended by prominent scientists and industrial leaders based in Houston, which featured a panel discussion between Emmanuel Ullmo, Frédéric Worms, Ramamoorthy Ramesh and Fred Oswald on the implications of the development of artificial intelligence on science and society. What a wonderful evening! After a few great meetings in Boston, Emmanuel Ullmo and I took the train to NYC to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Friends of IHES, Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques - IHES's partner organization in the US. This special event, held under the high patronage of Consul General Cédrik Fouriscot, took place at the beautiful Harvard Hall in the Harvard Club. It was the occasion to celebrate and thank all American supporters of the Institute since the foundation of Friends of IHES, starting with the late Jim Simons, to whom a special tribute was paid during that evening, and with the three co-founders of the organization, Bernard Saint-Donat, Henri Moscovici and Stanley Deser. Special thanks go to Yuri Tschinkel, our fantastic Master of Ceremonies, and to Gerard Ben Arous, our great keynote speaker! 𝟮𝟬 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗼𝘃 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Since their introduction in François Labourie's seminal 2004 paper, Anosov representations have been a driving force in the study of discrete subgroups of higher-rank Lie groups, and have helped to stimulate two decades of research in the area. In partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute, we celebrated 20 years of progress in the field with a conference and Young Researchers Workshop which brought together researchers studying the geometric, dynamical, and algebraic aspects of Anosov representations, as well as their connections to other topics. The Clay lecture was given by François Labourie from the Université Côte d'Azur, France on the topic “Double uniformisations’ cousin: complex projective spaces and anti de Sitter space”. In this interview with Xenia Flamm and Jeff Danciger, he provides insights into the interplay between geometry and dynamics, reflecting on the history of a paper whose concept became highly influential in the field of research, as well as his personal journey in mathematics, his promotion of young scientists, and the role of the mathematical community. 🎥 https://lnkd.in/ejtMVZwV

The French Mathematical Society has just published Alexander Grothendieck's prenotes on Residues and Duality, edited by Robin Hartshorne. The Institute has encouraged this book project from the very start, and Cécile Gourgues, Scientific Secretary at IHES, has transcribed the 60-year old typescript into LaTeX. Aurélie Biancarelli-Lopes - adjointe au maire de Marseille déléguée à l'Enseignement supérieur, à la recherche et à la vie étudiante - parlera des relations entre la science et la société. Son allocution sera suivie de la diffusion du film de George Csicsery sur Maryam Mirzakhani "Secrets of the Surface" (Zala Films) et d'un échange avec le réalisateur depuis la Californie. Today, the Cigales will be taking part in an afternoon dedicated to the first woman mathematician to win the Fields Medal in 2014: Maryam Mirzakhani. IHES is proud to announce that Yilin Wang, Junior Professor of Mathematics, is awarded this year's Salem Prize, administrated by the Institute for Advanced Study, for "developing deep novel connections between complex analysis, probability, and mathematical physics, particularly with regards to Teichmüller theory and the theory of the Schramm-Loewner evolution". The Salem Prize is given every year to a young mathematician who is judged to have done outstanding work on harmonic analysis and related topics.
