In this 30-minute online presentation and question and answer session, authors Diego Botero and Camille Combe present the latest ITF report, "Lost in Transmission: Communicating for Safe Automated Vehicle Interactions in Cities". As automated vehicles (AVs) are increasingly deployed, they are expected to introduce a paradigm shift in transport. In cities, the transition from the current state of interactions between users – where human-to-human interactions prevail – to situations where humans will interact with more or less automated vehicles will likely impact how other public space users interact with road vehicles. We work for transport policies that improve people's lives. The International Transport Forum at the OECD is an intergovernmental organisation with 69 member countries. We act as a policy think tank and organise an Annual Summit of transport ministers. The ITF is the only global body with a mandate for all transport modes.

This report reviews the regulatory frameworks and governance structures for app-based mobility services in three Southeast Asian cities: #Bangkok, #Manila and #PhnomPenh. Report insights 👇 ✅ Adopt “light touch” regulation to boost #innovation and free market forces. ✅ Simplify and equalise regulation across all operators and modes. ✅ Establish #data reporting, sharing, and analysis frameworks to support regulatory compliance. ✅ Set a minimum standard of #employment protections for app-based mobility workers. ✅ Consider the broader urban environment and target regulation to address market failures. #AutomatedVehicle safety: are we missing a critical piece of the puzzle? 🧩️ We #deepdive into the social dimension of urban interactions and how people, and machines, communicate in our cities. Safe #AV interactions mean understanding the complex interactions at play in our cities, often based on silent and implicit communications. But #AVs use explicit messaging ... will this be "Lost in Transmission"? 🤖 We believe that AVs should adapt to our cities, and not the other way around. On the second day of the 2024 Global Sustainable Transport Forum, Secretary-General, Young Tae KIM delivered a keynote on innovation-driven development in the transport sector. He stressed that technology for the sake of itself isn't progress – it’s the impact on #people and #society that truly matters. 💡 “𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞-𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝. 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝.” Dr. Kim also touched on key areas shaping the future of transport: 🔍 He addressed the potential of #ArtificialIntelligence to revolutionise transport, while urging caution around issues of trust, fairness, and accountability in AI solutions. 🚗 He emphasised that regulations for #AutomatedVehicles must evolve to keep pace with technological advancements, as current frameworks designed for human-driven vehicles are no longer sufficient. 🛫 He also discussed the potential for a #LowAltitudeEconomy powered by #AI-driven technologies, noting the need for regulatory frameworks that ensure these innovations enhance rather than disrupt human life. 🚀 The Global #SustainableTransport Forum is officially underway in Beijing! 🌏 In his speech at the opening plenary, Young Tae KIM emphasised the urgent need to decouple transport growth from emissions and encouraged leaders to take 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. "There may be multiple technological paths to #decarbonisation, but the one thing we cannot afford to do is wait. The environmental cost of inaction is far greater than the risks of proactive investment." 🔋 Dr. Kim also discussed how #innovation and #technology can drive the future of sustainable logistics, from #smartsteaming in shipping to electric long-haul trucks. He underscored the ITF's commitment to supporting governments and businesses on this journey. 📚 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰?
